Pirate JV/B Teams Beat Eldorado

By GANNON HANEVOLD

Moapa Valley Progress

The Moapa Valley High School JV and freshman B teams traveled into Las Vegas last week to take on the Eldorado Sundevils. It would be the first time this season that the two teams would play separate games and it quickly became an interesting evening of action.

It was a breeze to the finish line for the freshman team. The Pirate offense, led by quarterback Peyton Neilson, simply couldn’t be stopped. The Pirates cruised to put 52 points on the scoreboard. After four quarters, it was clear that even separate, the B team is still a talented group of athletes.

Head coach Stuart Humes was excited about what he saw from his team. In his first opportunity to see his team come together, he was more than impressed with the showing they made. “The freshmen played a great overall game,” Humes said. “We spread the ball around to all of our playmakers. It was a great team effort to put up 52 points in our first game of the year.”

As for the JV team, numbers and depth have been a concern since training camp. But the assistance of the B team has alleviated that over the first few weeks of the season. Being able to play four quarters with a limited bench was something head coach Dallas Larsen expressed as a potential obstacle for his team. Luckily for the Pirates, the team didn’t have to worry about playing a full 48 minutes against the Sundevils.

In the first quarter, the Pirates ran all over Eldorado. Without ever having to pass the ball, the Pirates offense was still able to put up touchdown after touchdown.

The offensive attack was greatly assisted by the always impressive Moapa defense. Most of the Pirates’ offensive drives amounted to less than 35 yards because of the dominant Moapa defense.
Rushing touchdowns by Steele Skinner and Garrett Clove led the Pirates early on.

Despite the lack of passing, quarterback Cameron Reese made his mark too. Reese added two rushing scores of his own and the Pirates would lead 31-6 at the end of the first quarter.
The lone score by the Sundevils came on special teams, meaning the Pirate defense had still not given up a score.

Just as the Pirates were getting rolling, the Sundevils couldn’t possibly go further. Due to injuries and minimal depth, Eldorado considered themselves unable to put out enough players to finish the game, and threw in the towel. Less than a minute into the second quarter, the game ended.
