Pirate JV Manhandles Miners

By GANNON HANEVOLD

Moapa Valley Progress

The Moapa Valley School JV and B teams combined last week for their game against the visiting Sunrise Mountain Miners. THe Miners were unable to field a freshman team. Needless to say, it was an absolute rout in favor of the Pirates.

The Miners were forced to punt on their opening possession. Unfortunately for Sunrise Mountain, they sent that punt to Steele Skinner, who dodged defenders on his way to the first touchdown of many for the Pirates.

One possession later, the Pirates used a rushing attack to get into the redzone where quarterback, Cam Reese found his way to the endzone to take a 13-0 lead.

Later in that same quarter, Austin Heiselbetz got in on the action. Taking a jet sweep around the right side from his receiver spot, he carried the Miners in for a touchdown. Now leading 20-0, the game appeared well in hand for Moapa Valley. It would be 27-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Three more touchdowns came in the second quarter. This included a long rushing score by freshman Jayme Carvajal, who had been supplying massive blocks for his teammates much of the first half. Austin Heiselbetz would return two interceptions for touchdowns that were called back for penalties. Regardless, the score stood at 47-0 at the end of the first half.

In the second half, Moapa Valley continued putting numbers on the scoreboard. Garrett Clove rushed for a touchdown making it 54-0 early in the third.

For the players on the sideline, perhaps the most exciting moment of the game came when German foreign exchange student, Jonas Schoenfelder rushed for a touchdown of over 40 yards. Jonas’ speed around the edge made it hard for defenders to touch him. The Pirate sideline erupted as he crossed the goal line.

When the final buzzer sounded, the score would be 66-0.
While the B team is still eagerly awaiting a chance to see the field, the JV Pirates continue to dominate each and every team they face. The defense has surrendered six points all season, and the offense has now put up over 50 points in consecutive weeks.

The B team will be put to the test this week with a rivalry road matchup against the Boulder City Eagles on Thursday, October 4.
