Pirate Golfers Compete At Divisionals

By JENNA RHUDE

Moapa Valley Progress

The last girls golf tournament in the Sunrise Division was held at the Las Vegas National Golf Course on Tuesday, October 2. The Moapa Valley High School team was represented by Patricia Slaughter, Checotah Rowley, and Grace Rhude.

Patricia finished this tournament with a respectable 118 after 18 holes. Checotah improved her score, making par on hole 8, finishing with 62 on the front nine, and doubling her score to 124. Grace also improved her score, making par on hole 10, finishing the front nine with 65, and doubling her score to 130.

“One fun thing about this tournament, is the girls were able to continue playing past hole 9, even if they didn’t make the cut,” said Coach Steffanie Gray.
“Congratulations to all the girls,” the coach added. “They worked very hard this season. We have two girls who have never played competitive golf and they showed improvement every week.”

Grace pulled off an impressive trick shot. “I bounced my drive off the sidewalk,” Grace said.
The ball landed almost out of bounds near the creek in some tall grass. It was either pick it up and take an automatic double par, or play it as is.
“Coach and I decided to give it a try,” Rhude said.

She lined up and hoped to shoot over the bridge and the water. Instead, the ball went under the bridge, past a tree, and landed on the fairway.
“I would like to say I knew exactly what I was doing, but sometimes it just works out,” Rhude said. “That has to be my favorite shot of the season.”

After all the scores for the season were tallied, Boulder City High School was the team representative for the division. Patricia Slaughter will represent MVHS during two days of individual regionals next week in Mesquite.
