Fishing The Overton Arm (October 24, 2018)

By LOREN BROOKS

Loren Brooks

What a nice welcome, arriving back in Overton, Nevada on Wednesday, October 10. Names, faces, church, and bread play a big part in our lives as we settle back here. Now it’s time to get ready for days on the lake catching Stripers, Small-Mouth Bass, Crappie, and Catfish with friends who are willing to admit that, “There is more to fishing than catching fish.” You have heard me quote that statement from author, Izaac Walton and Charles Cotton, who wrote the book The Compleat Angler back in 1653. It’s true.

So, I’m starting off with a few tidbits that will, I am hoping, whet your appetite for fishing. This week, I dropped by to visit people who fish, people who eat fish, and people who like a fresh slice of sourdough bread from me or my brother Roy. When you fish the Overton Arm of Lake Mead; and believe me, there are people in this valley that have fished the Overton Arm a lot longer than I have; you hear a lot of stories about the good old days, the days last year, the years before, and what’s happening right now.
Judge Lanny Waite had the best story, telling me about a big catch during the first week of October, catching 85 Stripers.

The next story I heard was from Bill and Marsh, who really got into a nice mess of small-mouth bass last week using crankbait. Bill said the best time to eat small-mouth is the day you catch them.

Making the rounds, which includes a visit to the post office and some good food at the Senior Center, led to more stories about fishing the Overton Arm. Some friends fished all day and caught only one. Others were out this past Wednesday and nailed 10 stripers trolling south of Echo Bay.

Getting ready for my first day on the lake, included checking the tires on my boat trailer. I came down I-15 on a wing and a prayer. Both tires were beyond safe, and Valley Service replaced the tires and wheel bearings for the many trips to the boat ramp this winter.

Keep your lines tight, and keep them in the waters of life.
