Fishing The Overton Arm (December 19, 2018)

By LOREN BROOKS

I received a fishing lure this week from a friend down the street. A black dot is painted on both sides of the lure and can be used for trolling or casting and targets striped bass and crappie.

That black dot may be significant. It reminds me of a fish called Sailor’s Choice or Spot fish that live in the Atlantic Ocean. It is a fish that is eaten by stripers. It is also a delicious fish like crappie or bluegill.

Years ago, we were living in Norfolk, Virginia close to the Chesapeake Bay. I was invited by a friend to fish for Sailors Choice. The two of us caught Spot Fish that night using bloodworms for bait. Each fish had a black dot close to its head on both sides.

My wife agreed to take care of my friend’s wife, who suffered from Parkinson’s disease, so he could go fishing. We didn’t get home until midnight. It was probably the last time my friend went fishing. He gave me his two fishing reels as a Christmas present. I’ll never forget my friend or that fish with a black dot on its body.

For the information of anglers fishing for stripers on the Overton Arm, consider the following about spot fish: stripers are known for feeding on spot fish. The spot vibrates a swim bladder using special muscles to make a croaking or a loud drumming sound. It is one of the fish targeted by stripers for food in the ocean. Since stripers in Lake Mead are the same kind of fish that live in the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans, those markings on spot fish may be significant.

The big catch of the week was made by Larry, Jason, and Frank. It is documented with a photo above. They spent the night using cut bait and catching 55 fish in the harbor at Echo Bay. Larry says he loves spending the night on the water with his buddies catching stripers and catfish.
