Run, Rudolph, run! Or were those Mrs. Ramos’ first graders?
It was a perfect day on Thursday, December 13, for Grant M. Bowler Elementary to hold its Eighth Annual Reindeer Run Race. The sun shone brightly and the playground was decorated with holiday decorations as parents eagerly lined up to watch their children compete.
The Moapa Valley High School (MVHS) Pirate Motion drill team kicked off the event with a festive dance. Joining them was a surprise visit by Santa Claus himself dancing and doing “the floss.” The dance team, Santa, and Mrs. Clause all stayed to cheer the students at the finish line.
Each grade ran a mad dash across the playground to Mrs. Claus who handed out candy canes while Santa high-fived and showed off his flossing dance skills again.
A special challenge group was the last to race. Challenge group runners can choose to run in this race if they were in the top twelve of their class for at least two years in a row. This allows more students an opportunity to win a Rudolph medal.
Keeping the kids entertained and focused while waiting to race was no easy task. Teachers and volunteers helped them play games and practice their starting stances while waiting to run.
Physical Education teacher, Denise Hoy did a tremendous job organizing and holding this race. “I love to see the kids excited to participate and compete,” Hoy said. “This is a great opportunity for them to learn how to win and how to lose.”
“It is also an opportunity to emphasize the importance of physical activity,” Hoy continued. “We give up a whole afternoon at school to dance, move, and run. It is fun to see teachers, parents, and community involvement as well.”
Students and teachers alike enjoy the race. “I loved running the race and I loved dancing with Santa and Mrs. Clause!” first-grader Chloe Harter said.
“I love how you get to try your best and run as fast as you can,” said fourth-grader Jack Wheeler.
“The reindeer run has become one of my favorite days of the year,” said Hoy.
