Speed, quickness, aggressiveness and referees who were reluctant to call fouls on either team was all behind the story of the Moapa Valley High School Boys Basketball team taking a 66-48 win over Pahranagat Valley in game placed on Friday, December 21 in Alamo.
The Pirates went big game hunting against the Panthers. They undid Pahranagat 16-9 in the first quarter and had a 35-16 lead at halftime.
Ten of the 12 Pirate players scored in the game, four in double figures. The Pirates were led by Jerrick Stastny with 12 points, all three-pointers, one in each quarter. Twelve points also came from Jessup Lake. Lucas Walker contributed 11 points and Joshua Cox tallied up 10.
Stockton Maxwell was game high for Pahranagat with 27 points. No other Panther player had more than seven points,
In the second half, however, the Panthers did make a run at the Pirates who might have thought they could sail off with the treasure without a second thought.
Pahranagat was ambushing the Pirates in the third quarter and early into the fourth quarter behind the 17 points from Maxwell. Where Moapa led at one point 55-26, Pahranagat cut the lead in half before MVHS Coach Stuart Humes put the starting five back in to gain control of the squall.
At the foul line, Moapa was 9-of-14. Pahranagat was 9-of-17.
Moapa Valley now has a 4-3 lead in the series between the two teams since 2010 and it was their first win since 2015.
The boy’s (6-5) are now off until after the Christmas/New Year’s break when they resume play at the Gator Classic in Las Vegas January 2-5 where their first game is scheduled to be with Chadwick (6-7) of Palos Verdes, Calif.
Their first games in league play will be at home against Virgin Valley on January 11.
