The Moapa Valley High School Girls Basketball team added another to the win column on Friday night, December 21. They recorded a 45-22 win over a young and inexperienced group of Pahranagat Valley Panthers in Alamo.
All of the players who got onto the floor scored for Moapa. Freshman Emma Humes and junior Kaitlyn Anderson led the girls with 10 points each. Andalin Hillstead followed with eight.
Pahranagat, despite being the defending Class 1A state champions, is on a rebuilding year and has not been a high scoring team. They only had five players score in last week’s game, led by senior Morgan Harris with 9 points.
Moapa used their own brand of speed and aggressiveness; and the physical style of play the referees were permitting; to fashion a 17-6 first quarter lead and 26-12 at halftime.
Things slowed down considerably in the second half, as PVHS scored only 10 points from three players. The Moapa team put up 19 points from five players.
At the free throw line, Moapa was 11-of-20, Pahranagat was 5-of-10.
It was the first time the two girl’s teams had played since 2016. Going back to 2007, Moapa is now 6-2 in the series and has won the last six straight meetings.
The girls of Moapa (7-4) will be off for the holiday break, but is scheduled to play in the Gator Classic in Las Vegas January 2-5, meeting teams that include Needles, Basic of Las Vegas, and Chugiak, Alaska, the consolation bracket winner in last year’s Alaska 4A girl’s state tournament.
Moapa’s first league game is with Virgin Valley on January 11 in Overton.
