MVHS Basketball In 3-Way Tie For #1 In League

It’s been a long time since the Moapa Valley High School Boys Basketball team has been in first place this late in the season. Right now they are tied with Boulder City and Chaparral.

All three teams have 2-0 records heading into the last month of the season. The Pirates are 12-6 overall.
Last week the Pirates played two games. The first was at Sunrise Mountain on Tuesday, Jan. 15. The Miners built a 7-2 lead early before the four minute mark. Then the Pirates took their first lead. Sunrise Mountain regained the lead on a layup and missed a free throw.

Moapa Valley would out-score the Miners in the second half of the first quarter 9-3 for a 17-11 lead to start the second half.
The Pirates jumped out to a 23-14 lead before a long scoring drought from five minutes to 2:20 when they converted a free throw for a ten point lead.

The Pirates pushed to a 31-18 lead midway through the second before the Miners finished the half with three free throws to trail 31-21 at halftime.
The Pirates out-scored the Miners 11-8 then maintained their lead through the fourth quarter for the final score at 57-45.

Lucas Walker led the Pirates with 16-points. Jessup Lake scored 10.
Dai’Quan Sykes scored 16-points to lead the Miners.

On Saturday, the Pirates hosted the Lincoln County Lynx. This game was a battle from the beginning. Moapa Valley held a 12-10 lead by the end of the first quarter then held that two point lead through halftime as both teams scored 18-points apiece in the second quarter.

The third quarter made the difference. The Pirates outscored the Lynx 23-16 to build a lead. The Pirates would hold on to win a tough fought game, 70-62.

Lincoln County finished with 20 free throw, making just 9 of them. The Pirates were 8-13 from the line.
Alex Vincent finished with 18-points for the Lynx while Cody Kyle scored a team leading 24.
Derek Reese and Cameron Reese both scored 16 for the Pirates while Lake added 14.

The Pirates will return to league play Wednesday against Sky Pointe. On Friday they go up against Chaparral at home.
