High School Sports Roundup (April 14, 2021)

Boys Soccer
The Moapa Valley High School Boys Soccer team finished its season last week with a 2-10 record.
The Pirates traveled to SLAM on Tuesday, Apr. 6, where they were beaten 2-1. Trent Nelson scored the goal for the Pirates. Moapa Valley led 1-0 at half time. Then the Pirates, who haven’t had much depth this year, ran out of gas allowing two goals in the second half.

Virgin Valley came to town Thursday and beat the Pirates 4-0. The Moapa team had a good first half but again slowed down in the second.
“I’m so proud of the kids this year “said MVHS Head Coach Randy Tobler. “We played at bigger schools this year and gained a lot of experience. We just didn’t have the depth.”

The Pirates will lose six seniors to graduation including Rylin Tobler, Zack Bailey, Dillion Jones, Fox Soderquist, Tyler Walker and Ethan Fullman.

Girls Soccer
The Pirates’ and the Bulldogs’ Girls Soccer teams faced off last week for the final game of the season for both teams. The rivalry game was held on Thursday, April 8 in Mesquite.

Both teams came with their best effort and the game ended in a draw with a final score of 1-1.
It was a marked advancement in performance for the Virgin Valley team. Earlier in the season, the Bulldogs had lost to the Pirates 3-0.

“We knew that they would be coming back ready to give us a challenge this time,” said MVHS Head Coach Lisa Cornwall. “Whenever we play them it is always a good game. And this one was certainly not disappointing. It was an exciting game to watch.”

Tennis
The MVHS Tennis team finished out the season going against Adelson on April 6. They were able to secure a win for the boy’s team and girl’s team with both a 7-5 score.
Kayla Lyon aced out her competition as she secured the title of MaxPreps Player of the Match.
For the boys, Freshman Cash Keller claimed his sets for the boys.

Later in the week, the Pirates travelled to Virgin Valley for the last match of the season. The Moapa boys won 17-1 with exceptional play from seniors Gavin Hadley, Trevor Nelson, and Kolby May.
Some upcoming talent was shown as freshman Mason Wheeler secured Maxpreps.com player of the match.

The Pirate girls also beat the Bulldogs, 12-0. Senior Karli Keller hit the courts with aggressiveness.
The Virgin Valley teams recognized their seniors. As VVHS is a very young team, they only had 3 boys recognized including Ron Nichols, Bridger Toone, and Scott Sperry. Nichols and Toone were able to secure the one winning set in doubles play against the Pirates.

“We are a very young team and we really would not have had any success without our three senior boys,” said VVHS coach Gavin Coburn. “They worked hard, improved, and outdid themselves this year.”
“I am indeed proud of the improvements our teams have made this year,” Coburn added. “From the beginning of the season to now, they have really improved.”

VVHS also played the previous week on Friday, April 1 at Pahrump. The Trojans ran away with the victory against the Bulldogs in that match.

MVHS Tennis teams finish the season with 9-2 records only losing to the private powerhouses Faith Lutheran and Meadows Academy.

Volleyball
The Lady Pirates traveled to Pahrump on Apr. 6, beating the Trojans, 3-2.
Then the team finished the season in a final home match against rival Virgin Valley on April 8.
The Pirates won the match, 3-0 with set scores of 25-9, 25-13, 25-21.

“All three of our teams had victories,” said MVHS head coach Mandie Matheson. “It was a great way to end the season.”

The Pirates finished 7-4 for the season, only losing to the big powerhouse schools of Bishop Gorman and Faith Lutheran.
