Sports Roundup (April 28, 2021)

MVHS Softball
The MVHS Softball team won their second game last week against SLAM on Wednesday, April 21, with a score of 16-1. The Pirates scored 6 runs in the top of the first inning to get a lead.

Andie Wood tripled in Mackenzie Staheli for the Pirates first run. Terra Evans singled in Wood for the second. Woods scored on a wild pitch. After a walk loaded the bases, Raegan Stankowski tripled in three runs for a 6-0 lead in just the first inning.
The Pirates added four runs in the second on five hits.

Ellie Cornwall doubled to start the third inning. Staheli singled to right to score Cornwall. Wood doubled to score Staheli. Wood scored on an error by the shortstop fielding a ground ball by Madi Fairchild. Frei scored one. Moapa Valley’s final run scored on a wild pitch.

Stankowski led the team with 3 RBI’s. Edyn Bennett was the winning pitcher as she allowed one hit and a run. Madi Fairchild pitched the final inning allowing a hit.

On Thursday the team played at Valley High School where pitcher Andie Wood pitched a one hit shutout. The Pirates came away with a 18-0 three inning win.
The Pirates scored three runs in the first inning, then broke the game open with eight more in the second inning.

It started with an error by the Vikings firstman man when she dropped a fly ball. The Pirates had six singles and a walk to help build the lead.
The Pirates bats were led by Makenzie Staheli, Ellie Cornwall, Terra Evans and Macie Frei who all knocked in RBI’s in the inning. Woods, Evans and Frei had 3 RBI’s each for the game.

Wood struck out eight of the nine batters she faced. The Pirates had 14 hits in the game.

MVHS Baseball
The MVHS Baseball team started their season with a home loss, 15-2 in five innings, against Boulder City on Monday, April 19. It wasn’t the way the Pirates wanted to start their season.

The Eagles scored their first runs of the game in the first inning when Joseph Giunta doubled scoring two runs.
Boulder City then scored six runs in the third inning blowing the game wide open with Deavin Lopez, Blaze Trumble, Giunta and Isaac Tuenga all driving in RBI’s.
Chris Hoy scored the only RBI for the Pirates.

Scott Bahde dominated the Pirates from the mound allowing just one hit and striking out 11.
Gavin Hadley pitched three innings allowing seven hits and 12 runs.

The Pirates travelled to Valley High School on Tuesday for their second game. There, they took out their frustrations on the Vikings with a 17-1 win.

Hadley had two doubles in the game and scored 4 RBI’s in leading the Pirates. Moapa Valley scored 5 runs in the first, third and fifth innings. Valley had only one hit in the game as Rylan Evans struck out 11 Vikings.
Tyson Staheli finished with a hit and three RBI’s and three runs scored.
The Vikings pitching walked 18 Pirates allowing 8 hits and 4 strikeouts.

MVHS Boys Volleyball
The newest high school sport at Moapa Valley High School sustained some tough losses last week at a tournament played in Boulder City on Saturday, April 24.
Their first match against Chaparral ended in a loss of 0-3 with set scores of 14-25, 22-25, 18-25.

Pirates had only 8 kills with no aces in the losing effort. Junior Cole Neilson had a 40% kill percentage. Sophomore Landon Kelly had the only dig of the game along with one assist.
The Pirates went on to play the juggernaut team of Boulder City in the tournament. They lost to the Eagles 0-3. The final score was 14-25, 12-25, 7-25 for the Pirates.

The Pirates had only 7 total kills and only 3 blocks in the match. But serving picked up as they had 6 aces. Senior Ethyn Fullman, sophomore Trent Nelson, and sophomore Joseph Whitmore added 2 aces each.

The Pirates are home next Saturday, May 1, as they host Pinecrest Academy Cadence at 12:00 pm. Then at 3:00 pm they go up against Eldorado.
