The Virgin Valley Little League wrapped up its season last week with a post-season tournament and championship games.
The Major League championship game, played on Tuesday, May 25 featured a face-off between Mesquite Veterans Center and Knights of Columbus teams. The Mesquite Veterans Center team ended up on top of the league with a final score of 14-2 against the Knights of Columbus.
In the Minor League, the Valley Pediatric Dental team went up against the Farmers Insurance/Mitchell Agency team on Thursday, May 20. The Farmers Insurance team, caoched by Chad Jensen shut out their opponent in the game with a score of 12-0.
The Junior League Softball tournament saw an unexpected upset. The #1 seed Mesquite Elks Lodge team, which had gone undefeated all season, won its first round, but then lost the next two rounds in the tournament to abruptly end its season.
The championship game pitted the Reliance Connect team against the Mesquite Dental team on Wednesday, May 26. Mesquite Dental ended up winning and taking the championship with a score of 13-5.
In minor league softball, the tournament bracket narrowed down to Falcon Ridge Car Wash against Kokopelli Landscaping in the championship game played Wednesday, May 19. In the end Kokopelli, coached by Paige Anderson and Jalee Dodenbier came away with the championship.
VVLL President Dan Wright said that it had been a strong season this year with about 75 kids playing on 7 teams in baseball, and around 80 kids playing on 8 teams in softball.
“We appreciate all the community support!” Wright said. “We especially want to tahnk the Sunrise Rotary Club for donating funds for the year-end trophies for the winning teams. We also appreciate the City and their staff for the use of the fields and the prep that they do to the facilities.”
For the first time, the VVLL selected an All-star baseball team which was chosen by a vote from the coaches.
The VVLL All-stars will be travelling to Logandale on June 11-12 for an All-star tournament which includes teams selected from Little League organizations in Moapa Valley; Alamo, NV and Caliente, NV.
“This is the first year we have done an All-star tournament and we are all pretty excited about it,” Wright said.
The 12 players selected to play on the VVLL All-star team include Charles Davis, Adler Shaner, Justin Andrus, Logan Andrus, Ty Felix, Jager Frei, Hudson Hughes, Cooper Jensen, Malachi Jordan, Uriah Pereida, Dominic Silveyra and Grady Toone. Alternate players selected are Cooper McOmie and Shea Shaner.
