Even though the newly announced local race track in Logandale won’t be a permanent structure, Jeff Hobbs of the Southern Nevada Racing Association is looking forward to getting things started.

Hobbs has already started prepping the in the northeast corner of the Fairground parking lot area ground for the racetrack. At about 8:30 am on Saturday, July 31, Hobbs, Paul Maddox, Jacob Jensen, and Jeffrey Jensen began to clear the ground and prep the track. Jacob Jensen and his son Jeffrey, brought a backhoe and blader, to start removing sand and blading the area.

“This is so fulfilling today,” said Hobbs. “We have had several people stop by, after seeing the work being done, excited to get their kids involved in the racing.”

One of those people was local Dwarf Car Professional Racer Orey “Little Pig” Woods.
“This is exciting and something this valley needs!” said Woods.

Hobbs explained that there is already a lot of interest in the youth racing league coming up. In fact, 12 year old Jeffrey Jensen, who was driving the backhoe, is being sponsored by Hobbs to be a driver for the racing season.

The racing will consist of Flatkarts, Outlawed Mini-Mods, Mini-Dwarfs, Quarter Midgets, and more. Though the majority of the racing is for the youth, adults can race in the flatkarts.

The start of the racing season is coming up in September. So there still is much to be done and a good deal of equipment is still needed, Hobbs said.

“All of our workers are volunteers, we are in need of donations,” said Hobbs. “We are especially looking more for non-cash donations such as equipment and volunteers.”

Hobbs went over a list of items needed for the racing season coming up. “The biggest need is a watering truck or a ‘mule’ that can be pulled behind a truck so we can water the track. We just need access or use of the truck during races.”

Other items included six fire extinguishers, saw horses, orange safety vests, three megaphones, a walkie-talkie set with 4-6 units, matching hats and shirts, banners and signs, canopies for the officials and staging area, a sound system, as well as construction cones, yellow caution tape, hay bales and more.

Another major need will be volunteers to help work the races, in all sorts of roles.
“We will need people to help with traffic, security, registration, check-in and more,” Hobbs said. “We definitely need someone with a good voice to be an announcer and do the up to date reports during the race.”

In return for donations and help, Hobbs said that advertising banner and signs can be attached to fencing around the track. “We will do whatever we can to help out donors and businesses who sponsor the racing events,” he said.

By the end of the day, the track was paved out and ready for the clay which will be put in later this week. The finished result is expected within a couple of weeks and definitely by the end of August at latest.

Those interested in sponsoring, advertising, donating, or racing in this new league may contact Southern Nevada Racing Association by calling Jeff Hobbs at (702) 885-5312.

All racers must visit the website powri.com, complete the necessary paperwork and pay the $150 fee for insurance.
