The Progress
The 2020-21 season was a tough one for Coach Scott Trimming and his Virgin Valley High School Girls Soccer team. The Lady Dawgs were hoping to defend their 3A Southern Conference Title and return to the State Championships as they had the year before. But thanks to COVID-19, it was not to be.
“We managed to play a few games in the spring against private schools, mostly 4A and 5A schools,” said Trimming.
Given the high calibre of programs like Faith Lutheran and Bishop Gorman, the Virgin Valley team was out of its league, quite literally.
Still Trimming saw a silvewr lining in it. “The girls did gain a wealth of experience playing the larger schools which should help them adjust back to 3-A ball,” he said.
Trimming got a solid turnout last week for his program to start practices. He has 34 girls on the roster. That including 28 who are returning from the previous two seasons.
“We have three freshmen who should be a good addition to our team,” Trimming said. “Once they gain some experience under their belt they will do well.”
The biggest turnover suffered by the Bulldog team was in the backfield. “We lost a huge amount on the defensive side due to graduation,” Trimming said. “But we have the depth to rebuild.”
The team has a strong attacking force of mid-fielders. And the Bulldogs still have the returning Nevada All-State keeper Erin Ofori who will be defending the net.
There is also strength and depth on the offensive side of the team, Trimming said.
“Katrina Beltran will be our leading striker with help from the kids who work up,” he said. “Two of my freshmen will be working the striker and keeper positions.”
“I will also be counting heavily on mid-fielder Leslie Salazar, defender Addie Snyder and winger Emma Hughes,” Trimming added.
The Bulldogs will open by travelling to Boulder City on August 31.
The first home match will be played against private school Cristo Rey St. Viator on September 3.
The team’s mettle will really be tested at home on September 14 when the Lady Dawgs face an always strong Pahrump squad.
Other home games include Del Sol (Sept. 22), Equippo (Sept. 28), Cheyenne (Oct 8), Mojave (Oct. 12), Moapa Valley (Oct. 18 and Chaparral (Oct. 28).
