MVHS Cross Country On The Trail To Another Strong Season

The Moapa Valley High School Cross Country teams are working towards another strong season for both boys and girls teams.

The boys, lead by captains Cyrus Katich and Marcus Shambaugh, will again be in the hunt for the top spot in the 3A division, both at region and at state. These two athletes have worked their way up and have excelled in this sport since their freshman year. They are hoping to extend their success through to November this year.

“These young men realize they have a target on them,” said Boys Coach Gary Watkins. “They have trained hard the entire summer to improve their skills. Now they are looking forward to every single competition they go to this year.”

The boys team has continued to grow. The team has added another good freshman class that will help maintain that culture of success into the future.

The Pirate girls team, led by senior phenom Emma Humes, is also looking for a strong season as well.

The team figures to be competitive at the top levels this season.

The girls team has not seen the numbers that the boys team has. The team consists of only six girls, three of whom are returning starters. There is also one freshman and two very strong foreign exchange students joining the team.

Humes will be competing for that top spot this year at regionals as well as the state in the 3A division.

The teams will begin their season on Aug. 28 at the Red Rock Invitational at Floyd Lamb Park in Las Vegas.

The Pirates are planning to host their own invitational meet on Sept. 18 at the Clark County Fairgrounds in Logandale.
