Pirate Boys Soccer Face Season Of Rebuilding

The Moapa Valley High School Boys Soccer team got its start in practicing last week. They spent the heat of the afternoons doing sprints and other conditioning activities, as well as drills to sharpen both offensive and defensive skills on the field.

It will be in a rebuilding year for the Pirates this season. The team lost several key players to graduation and relocations out of the valley. Coming back is a rather young team, according to head coach Randy Tobler.

But there is still some experience left on the team. Radley Tobler and Tyler Hopkins will be the leaders on the team this year. Both are four year starters for the Pirates.

Tyler Nelson and Mcgill Rios will also help lead the team.
Jeremiah Mortenson will fill the goalie spot this year.

“We are going to be rebuilding this year,” said Tobler. “We have some exchange students and some new kids who are pretty good.”
Last spring, during a COVID-shortened season, the Pirates ended up with a 2-10 record.

The team suffered some battering losses to powerhouse 5A teams like Faith Lutheran and Bishop Gorman. But they also didn’t fare so well with 3A teams like Pahrump Valley and Virgin Valley.

The Pirates scored their two wins against charter school Mater Academy East Las Vegas, and 2A White Pine in Ely.

The Pirates will be going up against against some experienced teams who have been competing for a couple of years now. The Pirates will work hard to stay competitive and will be playing hard.

The Pirates will host the first game at the season which will bring Pahrump Valley to town. That game will be played on Thursday, Aug. 26 at 5 pm.

Other home games include Sky Pointe (Sept. 13), SLAM (Sept. 23), Boulder City (Sept. 29), Basic (Oct. 7), Virgin Valley (Oct. 12), and Losee (Oct. 15).

The Pirates will face off one more time against the VVHS Bulldogs in Mesquite on Oct. 27.
