The Progress
Virgin Valley Boys Soccer coach Jose Galindo and his players are excited to start a new season.
“I can hardly wait for a real season to start without all the trauma that we experienced this past year,” Galindo said last week.
Galindo said that his players are hungry for soccer and they have already showed a readiness to learn in practice.
Turnout for soccer was a bit sparse this year. There were 19 players who came out to play. So the VVHS program will only be fielding a varsity team this year, Galindo said.
“We are a young team,” Galindo said. “But I have six seniors to lead out, along with some very excited freshmen.”
The Bulldogs will be led by veteran players Alex Rebeiro, Eric Solario, Harold Haro, Andre Munoz, Martin Cordero, Dan Ysidrio and Oscar Camacho.
Galindo said that he has some solid defenders and midfielders plus excellent wings on the team.
“Now I just need to find a good striker among the boys,” Galindo said.
He explained that the team has lost its star striker, Zack Trimming. Trimming has left the VVHS program to work with the Olympic Development team.
But Galindo is confident in his team’s development and motivation.
“The kids have a tremendous desire which is motivating me this year,” he said.
Last year was a tough one for VVHS Boys Soccer. It was an abbreviated season and the team only played eight games in four weeks. Many of those were against 4A and 5A private school powerhouse programs like Bishop Gorman and Faith Lutheran. Those games seemed almost unwinnable to the small town school’s team.
Even so, the Bulldog team salvaged three wins on the season. Two of those were matches against their rival Moapa Valley High School. The other was against Cristo Rey St. Viator of North Las Vegas.
Now coach Galindo is celebrating the return to league play this season.
“After all of that, playing against 3-A schools again will be a pleasure,” he said.
The Bulldogs start their season on the road on August 24 at Pahrump Valley.
For their first home match, the Bulldogs will host Cristo Rey on September 3. Other games played on the VVHS field will include matches again Equipo (Sept. 23), Pahrump (Sept. 29), Losee (Oct. 7), Basic (Oct. 11), Cheyenne (Oct. 15), and the final home match against Moapa Valley on Oct. 27.
