Pirate Volleyball
The Moapa Valley High School Volleyball team travelled to Yerington for a weekend tournament that had 32 teams competing. On Friday, August 20, the Pirates played Fernley, Wooster, Sierra Sage Academy/Right of Passage in their assigned pool. All their matches were victories in straight sets.

On Saturday, the Pirates played in another assigned Pool and won over Carson City, North Tahoe, and Yerington in two straight sets each.

From the outcome of both pools, the Moapa girls then qualified for the 4-Team Single Elimination Gold Bracket Play. The team played Galena for the Semifinals, losing in a 3 set thriller by the scores of 33-31, 15-25, 8-15. No consolation match was played.

“The girls showed a lot of grit throughout the weekend, especially being behind many times and fighting their way to the win,” said MVHS head coach Mandie Matheson. “The most exceptional part of the weekend was watching different players in each game make big plays in clutch situations. They grew together each match.”

Matheson also outlined the bench play as well. “The players on the bench provided fire and energy to keep the girls on the court encouraged and working hard. It was a great start to the season and gave us the opportunity to really pinpoint the many areas we need to continue to improve upon.”

The B, JV, and Varsity Girls Volleyball Teams will be in play at the Meadows Academy in Las Vegas on Tuesday, August 24 at 5:00, 6:00, and 7:00 pm respectively. The Pirates’ first home match will be the following week against Las Vegas High on September 2.
