Fall Sports Roundup (September 8, 2021)

VVHS Girls’ Soccer
It may have been an omen when Virgin Valley High School Girls’ Soccer coach Scott Trimming said earlier in the week, “We’re supposed to play this Friday, but you never know with games being canceled all over Southern Nevada due to positive COVID tests.”

Well, he was right. Friday night’s planned matchup with Cristo Rey was postponed due to two students testing positive for the virus. The game will be scheduled for another time.

On a positive note, Virgin Valley High School girl soccer team showed their grit on Tuesday August 31 coming from behind to tie Boulder City 2-2. Sophomore Katrina Beltran struck goal on an assist from Emily Jimenez. Senior Dani Correa added the second goal beating her defender on transition taking the goal on her own.

“Tianna Tafili had a great game from her outside back position and was instrumental in shutting attacks and creating opportunities for our girls to advance the ball forward,” Trimming said.

The Bulldogs overall roster strength was apparent as the J.V.s won 4-1 behind goals struck by Linda Woodruf, Natalie Isidro, Sadee Burton with Woodruf adding her second goal on a breakaway. Freshman Anna Sedano had two assists followed by one from Katie. Keeper Natalie Martinez had six saves for the match.

MVHS Boys’ Soccer
The Moapa Valley boys soccer team hosted Mater Academy East on Monday, Aug. 30, as they fought their way to a 2-2 tie.
Radley Tobler scored the first Pirate goal just outside the 18 foot line.
Fritz Eisfeld scored the second Pirate goal giving Moapa a 2-0 lead.

Mater East scored their first goal on a penalty kick and the second when the ball somehow found its way under Jeremy Mortensen’s arm, tying the game.

“We are a young team with only two returning players from last year.” said MVHS head coach Randy Tobler. “But I fell like we played a great game.

The Pirate boys aren’t scheduled to play again until Monday, Sept. 13 against Somerset Sky Pointe in Las Vegas.

MVHS Volleyball
The Lady Pirates scored a victory in straight sets over Las Vegas High on Thursday, September 2. This match was the first home match of the season as the Pirates took advantage of the energy of the crowd and played with enthusiasm.

In the first set, the Pirates came out with power winning 25-15. The win came from strong defensive play especially from Terra Evans. In the second set, the Wildcats jumped out to a 4 point lead and looked like they may win it. But after a time out to reset, the Pirates came back with Sydney Reese and Alyssa Jolley making kills to secure the victory 25-17. The third set, the Lady Pirates came out strong, but Las Vegas fought hard as the competition grew intense. The defensive play by the Pirates helped them to finish off the Wildcats 25-20.

With a 3-0 match victory, the Pirates record is 8-1 with only one loss to the 5A Galena High from up North. Not counting the tournament play, the team is undefeated.

“Our serving, receiving, passing was a little shaky which resulted in way fewer offensive options,” said MVHS Head Coach Mandie Matheson. “So Defense was the storyline of the night.”

Talley Blackwell headed up the team’s defensive play with 13 digs while Emily Matheson had 10. Evans also added in another 7 digs.

On the offensive side, no one hit double digits for kills, but Sydney Reese had 7. Alyssa Jolley and Makale Evans both had 4 each.

The Lady Pirates are off for a week, but resume play at home on September 14 against SLAM Academy. The Varsity match will start at 6:00 pm in the MVHS Gymnasium.

MVHS Tennis
The MVHS Tennis teams keep winning by forfeit as more teams lack the full roster for an official match. But this week both teams were able to play one official match to the end against Boulder City on August 30.

The Boys team lost to Boulder City 4-14 and the Girls lost 3-15. The experienced Eagles boys team has only dropped one match all season a while their Girls team is also 6-1.

Boys Doubles team Aidan Johnson and Braden Leavitt played a competitive match barely losing 2-3.
Pirate Savannah Aikele won 3-2 in her singles play.

Both the Boys and Girls teams hold a 3-3 Record for the season. Head Coach Donna Swanson is said that her young and inexperienced teams are picking up the skills needed to be competitive.

The Pirates are on break this week and will resume play against Pahrump on September 14 at home starting at 3:00 pm.
