It took less than 30 seconds into the match, for Cristo Rey High School’s Enrique Reyes-Avila to reach goal, giving the Royals an early 1-0 advantage in the game against the Virgin Valley High School Boys’ Soccer team played in Mesquite on Friday, Sept. 3. It was the first game of the season for the young Bulldog team.

Showing why he is one of the top strikers in 3A soccer, Reyes added two more goals before the match was 5 minutes in, giving the Royals a 3-0 lead.

The Bulldog squad settled down on the defensive end giving their offensive side time to respond. Bulldog striker Erick Solario struck goal at the 7 minute mark to cut the Royals lead to 3-1.

But Reyes came back at the Dawgs with his fourth goal of the match followed by two Royal teammates striking goal minutes later, to up the Royals lead to 6-1.

The Bulldogs regrouped during the water break, moving their goalkeeper to the offensive side. The move worked as the Dawgs defense and offense responded with hard play on both sides of the ball.

Bulldog Andre Haro found the back of the net 30 minutes in, to cut the lead to 6-2. And minutes before halftime, Bulldog Isaias Trujillo struck goal to cut the lead further, 6-3.
The second half of the game began with Reyes not wasting time reaching the net for his fifth and final goal of the match.

The Bulldog defense grounded the Royals with good defensive play until the Cristo Rey squad put three more goals on the board 22 minutes into the second half.

The Bulldogs Adrian Rosales would finish the day’s scoring striking goal late in the match making the score 10-4 in favor of Cristo Rey.

“I want to give a big thanks to our freshman for coming in and playing hard,” said Bulldog coach Jose Galindo. “It could be a little intimidating playing varsity for the first time.”

“I am proud of all the kids on how they played with very little preparation and new rules to follow,” Galindo added. “We can only get better as a team as the season progresses.”

The Boys will be on the road for the next two weeks before returning on September 23 to face Equippo High School. All matches will be played on the new turf at the high school.
