Fall Sports Roundup (September 22, 2021)

MVHS Tennis
The Moapa Valley High School Tennis Teams had only one match last week against Pahrump Trojans. The match was on Tuesday, Sept. 14 at home.
The Boys team won the match, 17-1 and the Girls team won, 11-7.

MVHS Head Coach Donna Swanson pointed out the fact that many of the starters were quarantined for the match so several new members of the team got to gain some experience playing.

For the boys team, Nick Hoy went 3-0 in singles play, Garrett Hadley went 2-0 in singles play, while Aiden Johnson and Braden Leavitt won 3-0.

For the girls team, singles player Maria Perez went 2-0. Other players were sub-ins due to the COVID policies and only played one set each.

The Pirates have scheduled Canyon Springs at home starting Thursday, Sept. 23 at 3:00. The Pirates have a winning record for the season but as Head Coach Swanson has expressed it feels not really earned.

“This year has been a disappointment in our division because out of ten league matches, five have resulted in forfeits,” she said.

MVHS Volleyball
The Moapa Valley High School Girls Volleyball Team got back to work and whistled while they did, whistling past SLAM Academy 3-0 in a home meet on Tuesday, Sept. 14.

The match started with some outstanding play from both side. But the Pirate Ladies came out on top 25-19.

By the second set, the Bulls lost their groove. But Pirate kills started striking the floorboards and the Moapa team ended quickly with a 25 – 11 win.

The third set did not get much better for the Bulls. The Pirates tallied up kill after kill added in with some excellent defensive play. They closed out the match with a 25-16 win, improving their record to 9-1 on the season and undefeated in the South.

“We had some excellent play from Terra Evans and Rachel Lyman in performing serve, receive, and passing,” said MVHS head coach Mandie Matheson. “They allowed for us to get our offense rolling.”

Sydney Reese had fourteen powerful kills for the Lady Pirates offense while Halle Evans and Rachel Lyman each added four kills. Talley Blackwell added four aces to help the offensive effort.

The Pirates take on Desert Pines at home on Wednesday, Sept. 22 beginning at 7 pm. They will then travel to Clark on Friday for a match starting at 6:00 pm.

“The girls are motivated, hardworking, and extremely coachable. We are very excited to see what their work ethic will do for them as we move into Region play,” said Matheson.
