Bulldog Football Rolls Over Valley, 38-6

By BOB SNELL

The Progress

What started out slowly, soon turned into a dominating performance for the Virgin Valley High School Football team on Friday night, Oct. 8 in Las Vegas.

The Bulldogs used a big second quarter to assume command in rolling to a 38-6 victory over Valley High School in a 3A South Mountain League contest on the Vikings home field.

The win improved Virgin Valley to 6-1 overall and 2-0 in league play. The Vikings fell to 3-5 overall and 1-2 in league.

“We started a little sluggish,” VVHS head coach Matt Woods said. “We’re working some kids into different positions and that probably had something to do with it. We’re finding out who can play where.”

The Bulldogs got on the board midway through the first quarter when quarterback Gavin Brown hooked up with Jimmy Kelly for the first of their three touchdown passes on the night – this one covering 55 yards.

Virgin Valley’s defense struck early in the second quarter when Benson Leavitt went 40 yards on a scoop-and-score following a Valley fumble. It was the second straight game the Bulldog defense has returned a fumble for a touchdown.

On their next possession, running back Kellen Dugan, who rushed for 106 yards in the contest, scored on a two-yard run and Edgar Perez booted the point after to give the Bulldogs a 20-0 lead.
Brown, who threw four touchdown passes on the night, tossed a 10-yard scoring pass to Cam Perkins to close out the first half with Virgin Valley on top 26-0.

Kelly got TD passes of 48 and 13 yards from Brown in the third quarter to close out the scoring for the Bulldogs.

Freshman defensive lineman Alex Valle had a big night for the Bulldogs recording five quarterback sacks.
“Alex had great game,” Woods said. “When he figures out his potential, he’s going to be hard to handle.”

Virgin Valley will host Western of Las Vegas this Friday for Homecoming with kickoff set for 7 p.m. inside Evan Wilson Stadium. With the Rivalry Game looming on Oct. 22, the Bulldogs can’t afford to look past the Warriors.

“We can not overlook Western,” Woods said. “They have athletes and have speed. There’s a lot of stuff going on for homecoming this week. We need to stay focused and get ready for Western.”
