Local Runners Compete In Two Races Last Week

MVHS runner Cash Keller sprints the final leg of the course during the SNTCCCA Invitational meet held at Canyon Springs High School in Las Vegas on Saturday.

There were two opportunity for area cross country runners to compete last week.
The first meet was limited to underclassmen at the Bud O’Dea Frosh-Soph Championship held at Desert Breeze Park. This meet involved runners from both Moapa and Virgin Valleys.

Later in the week was the SNTCCCA Invitational meet held at Canyon Springs High School. The Moapa Valley High School teams attended this meet and performed very well.

At the Bud O’Dea Frosh-Soph Championship, the 2.5 mile race was led by Logan Scott from Faith Lutheran with a time of 13:54.

The first Pirate runner to cross the finish in the freshman race was Gavin Hendrick in 13th place at 15:44. Other Pirate participants were Russell Hardy at 17:01, Stockton Humes (18:40), and Chistopher Houston (20:34).

Leading the Bulldog freshmen was Isaac Greig who finished at 16:19. He was followed by team mates Max Hughes (21:14), Joshua Matthews (21:16), Jesus Sandoval (21:32), Bryant Denninghoff (21:59), and Oliver West (32:45).

Leading the sophomore boys race was Kipruto Koech or Sierra Vista, who crossed the finish line at 13:57. Taking 7th in the race was Pirate runner Kayden Dixon at 15:26. Other Pirate runners included William Anderson (15:44), Noah Christensen (16:19), and Isaac Thompson (19:07).

Virgin Valley runner Dylan Barnum took 17th in the race at 16:01. Other Bulldog runners included Gavin Hughes (16:40), Michael Anderson (18:54),

The girls freshmen race was led by MacKenna Calvin from Centennial with a time of 16:54. The first Lady Pirate to cross the finish was Sasha Barnes at 19:10.

In the girls sophomore race, VVHS runner Jenna Walters took 4th place with a time of 17:49.
The SNTCCCA Invitational featured a particularly fast 5K course. This allowed for many runners to beat personal records.

In the Varsity A Mens race, Foothill runner Nathan Carlin led with a time of 15:35. Pirate runner Cyrus Katich took 4th in the race with a time of 16:06. Marcus Shambaugh ended sixth with a time of 16:13. Other Pirate runners included Ethan Witter (16:59), Trevor Witter (17:23), and Joseph Boss (17:26).

In the Varsity A Womens MVHS senior Emma Humes took fourth with a time of 19:09. Other Pirate finishers were Kenzie Hughes (21:21), Sasha Barnes (22:49) and Beverly (23:53).

Kayden Dixon took second in the Varsity B1 race with a time of 17:51. Jedidiah Stephens took fourth with a time of 18:11.6, and William Anderson was a hair behind him 18:11. Other Pirate runners included Gavin Hendricks (18:28), Joseph Barnes (18:29), and Noah Christensen (18:50), Cash Keller (19:02), Russell Hardy (19:39), Logan Harris (20:03), Braxton Farley (20:22), Grant Muhlestein (20:32), Isaac Thompson (20:34), Nick Leavitt (20:45), Stockton Humes (20:55), Christopher Houston (22:06), and Iain McMurray (24:06).

“The Pirates had a great showing at the last regular race of the season,” said coach Heather Humes. “They ran hard and proved themselves ready for the post season.”

Virgin Valley High School will be hosting the next meet on Saturday, Oct. 23.
