The Progress
The boys and girls flag football teams at Charles A. Hughes Middle School of Mesquite reached the championship games for the inaugural Clark County School District middle school flag football tournament on Wednesday, Nov. 10.
The Lady Hawks captured the girls championship by defeating Gibson Middle School of Las Vegas, 13-6, in the Division II title game held at Green Valley High School in Henderson.
Linda Kiowa’s pick-six interception with 52 seconds remaining in the contest snapped a 6-6 tie and clinched the championship trophy for the Lady Hawks to cap an unbeaten season under head coach Joey Bowler. Kiowa also ran for a touchdown in the first half for HMS.
The Lady Hawks, who were the Northwest Division II league champion, defeated Mack Middle School of Las Vegas, 37-6, in a semifinal contest on Tuesday at Mojave High School in North Las Vegas.
The boys were not as fortunate, however. The Hawks fell to Mannion Middle School of Henderson, 19-16, in the Division II title contest at Green Valley.
An apparent game-winning touchdown pass in the final seconds of play by the Hawks was nullified when the HMS receiver stepped out of the back of the end zone while making the catch.
Parker Jensen and Aidan Munoz scored touchdowns and Elian Pinto hauled in both two-point conversions for HMS, which went unbeaten in Northwest Division II play under head coach Spence Goates.
The Hawks reached the title game by defeating Mack Middle School, 49-0, in Tuesday’s semifinal at Mojave.
CCSD added flag football in the fall and soccer in the spring this school year to go along with basketball in the winter for middle school sports.
