Lady Pirates Win The Brickhouse Classic

The Lady Pirates Basketball team celebrates winning the first place trophy at the Brickhouse Classic Tournament in Sparks, NV on Saturday, Dec. 4.

The Moapa Valley High School Girls Basketball team travelled all the way to Sparks, Nevada last week to participate in the Brickhouse Classic Tournament. The team won first place in the tournament.

The Pirates opened the tournament on Thursday against the Wooster Colts. The Pirates built a 13-8 lead by the end of the first quarter and a 27-17 lead by halftime.

Moapa Valley continued to build their lead by out scoring 14-7 in the third quarter for a 41-27 lead.
The Pirates finished off the Colts by going on a 16-5 run for a 57-29 win.

MVHS senior Emma Humes led the Pirates with three 3-pointers scoring 13 points total for the game. Sophomore Haylie Western scored 10 points in the game for the Pirates.
Sydney Reese, a freshman had 12 rebounds with Western adding 10. Linn Engelgren led the team with 4 assists.

The Pirates returned to the court on Friday evening to play the North Valleys Panthers. The Pirates blew the Panthers out 57-15.

Humes scored 15 points making 3 of 5 three pointers. Reese added 14 while Andie Wood scored 10.
In the tournament final on Saturday, the Lady Pirate team played the Truckee Wolverines. It was a battle in the first quarter ending in a 13-13 tie.

But it was the second quarter that did the Wolverines in as the Pirates sprinted to a 30-16 lead with a 17-3 run.
“Overall our depth and athleticism were really evident throughout the tournament.” said MVHS Head Coach Brandon Jones. “We wore teams down by playing up tempo and rotating all eleven girls.”

In the second half the Wolverines could not catch up as the Pirates outscored Truckee 26-22 for the final 56-38.
Emma Humes was named the tournament Most Valuable Player.

Earlier in the week, the Pirates hosted the Enterprise Wolves on Tuesday, Nov. 30. The Pirates sent the Wolves home with a 40-20 loss.

The Pirates started slowly building a 9-3 lead by the end of the first quarter. They had pushed that lead to 20-11 by half time.

A very slow third quarter for the Wolves had the Pirates shut them out and building a 27-11 lead to start the four quarter.

Reese was the leading scorer for the Pirates with 10 points.Sophomore Savana Burt and Western each had 6 points.
The Pirates out-scored the Wolves 13-9 in the fourth for the final.

The Pirates wnt 16 of 57 from the floor in shooting for 28%. Enterprise was 7-45 for 16% shooting.
The Pirates travel to SECTA on Tuesday then host Cadence and Eldorado on Wednesday and Friday respectively.
