The Progress
The Moapa Valley High School gymnasium was full of activity on Saturday, Dec. 4. But it wasn’t because of winter sports this time.
The MVHS Boys Volleyball program, a springtime sport, was hosting a Co-Ed Community Volleyball tournament which involved a total of nine teams of about 8 players each. The tournament started with a round of pool play in the morning and then went on to a full bracketed tournament in the afternoon.
The tournament was put on as a fundraiser for the boys’ program which is only in its second year as a newly instituted men’s sport at the school.
Last year, even during the COVID pandemic, the new spring sport was very popular at the school. “We were surprised that our numbers were way better than we thought they would be,” said Tiffany Frederick who assisted in coaching the program last year and will be taking the position of head coach this spring.
“We really weren’t sure what to expect with all of the COVID impacts. But we had a lot of players come out to play.”
With that in mind, Frederick saw the need to raise money for the popular program.
“Every time we play in a tournament during the season, we have to pay a fee of around $500 for the team to enter,” Frederick said. “As a completely new program we don’t have the budget to do that very often. But I feel those tournaments are important.”
Saturday’s event was considered a great success. Many of the teams were formed by local families, some of which recruited players from Las Vegas and other areas to play on their teams. What resulted was a full day of volleyball, running multiple matches at a time on the gym’s three courts.
“We are excited about our prospects for the coming season,” said Frederick. “We are hoping to have a good solid team in the spring that will do well.”
