Winter Sports Roundup (December 8, 2021)

MVHS Wrestling
The Moapa Valley High School Junior Varsity Wrestling team competed against four other teams in the Cowboy JV Dual tournament held at Chaparral High School in Las Vegas on Saturday, Dec. 4.

The Pirate team, made up of 13 young JV athletes, held its own at the tournament going 2-2. The team beat Chaparral and Boulder City while losing to Basic and Green Valley.

The win against Boulder City was a close one with the Pirates winning by only one match. “But we will take it,” said MVHS Head Coach Ryan Anderson. “Whenever we can beat Boulder City it is a good day for me.”

The Pirates fell by a similarly close measure against Green Valley, losing by just one match.
Pirate wrestler Jackson Burt wrestling in the 170 lb. class went 4-0 in the tournament with 4 pins.
Jared Evans also went 4-0 in the 152 lb weight class getting three pins and a tech fall.
Gavyn Frederick also had a perfect 4-0 record at the tournament getting three wins and 1 forfeit in the 195 lb class.
William Anderson went 3-1 in the 132 lb weight class.

“We have a very young team this year and a lot of our kids are just learning what to do,” Anderson said. “But they are coming along. A few got their first wins this weekend. And we will keep getting better from here.”

VVHS Girls Basketball

The Virgin Valley High School Girls Basketball team had its first taste of competitive basketball last week. New Dawg coach Cliff Hughes, took his team down to Vegas to face some of the top 2A and 3A teams in Nevada in the Lake Mead Invitational tournament.

The Bulldogs came home from the tournament with two victories and a third place berth in thetournament.

The Dawgs began tournament play on Thursday December 2 against Somerset Skypoint and ran away with a 59-21 win. The team was led by freshman Natalie Isidro and junior Riley Price with 16 and 11 points respectively. Price also led the Dawgs in rebounding with 5 offensive and 5 defensive boards. Ana Tausinga added 9 boards of her own to help the Bulldog cause.

The Bulldogs ran into a run and gun Pyramid Lake Friday night squad and fell 50-21.
The Bulldogs showed grit after the big loss, coming back on Saturday to defeat SLAM 52-28. Tausinga led the Dawgs offense with 18 points followed by Price with 15 points of her own. Reggi Frei chipped in an additional 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Bulldog guard Adi Snyder was a thief on the floor with 12 steals and 7 assists.
“I felt we made some improvements in the three games we played,” said Hughes. “I was proud of the girls for their comeback on Saturday night.”

The Bulldogs have two 3A crossover games this week. They travel to Eldorado on Tuesday and host SECTA on Friday night.
