Quarterback Nina Miramontes threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Calla Haviland with no time remaining on the clock to lift Virgin Valley to a dramatic 33-32 victory over host Coronado on Friday night in Henderson.
The victory in the final non-conference game of the season keeps the Lady Bulldogs unbeaten as they improve to 9-0 overall.
After leading for most of the game, Virgin Valley found itself trailing 32-27 late in the contest. The Lady Bulldogs drove to the Coronado 12-yard line in the waning seconds.
With time for one last play, Miramontes fired a pass into the end zone that Haviland caught for the winning score.
Miramontes, who completed 15-of-20 passes for 154 yards and five touchdowns on the night, tossed a four-yard scoring pass to Haviland to open the scoring in the first quarter.
Haviland, who had four touchdown catches in the game, hauled in a six-yard TD pass in the second quarter. Miramontes found Kelly Denninghoff for a one-yard score as the Lady Bulldogs led 20-12 at halftime.
Miramontes connected on a one-yard TD pass to Haviland early in the fourth quarter to put Virgin Valley up 27-19.
The Lady Cougars rallied to score two touchdowns to take a 32-27 lead setting the stage for the Lady Bulldogs’ game-winning drive.
Haviland had eight receptions for 94 yards while Tyra Ludvigson had three catches for 24 yards. Graciee Draney led the Virgin Valley rushing attack picking up 100 yards on 15 carries with Denninghoff adding 45 yards on six carries and Malia Mcomie getting 36 yards on four carries.
On the defensive side of the ball, Haviland and Cheyann Hafen had seven flag pulls apiece and Logan Cude had the lone quarterback sack.
Virgin Valley will open 3A South conference play Friday against Eldorado in Las Vegas at 4:30 p.m. They will play at SLAM in Las Vegas on Tuesday (Jan. 18) also at 4:30 p.m.
