The Virgin Valley High School Girls Basketball team pitched a defensive shutout on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 9, as they held the SLAM Academy to only 26 points in a 48-26 blowout.

It was the second win of the year for the Dawgs as they crushed Pinecrest Cadence Academy 61-17 on Wednesday January 5 in Las Vegas. The Bulldog defense held Cadence to 3 points in the first half and zero points in the third period for the easy win.

The Bulldogs were expecting a tough matchup with the 5-2 Bulls from SLAM Academy. But the Dawgs defense swarmed to take a 15-4 advantage after one period of play.

The Bulldogs man press caused numerous forced and unforced turnovers by the Bulls giving the Dawgs some easy points in the paint.

The Bulldogs substituted early and freely as coach Cliff Hughes used his whole bench in the game. “We played hard and our defense was solid,” said Hughes.

The Bulldogs inside game was too hard to handle for the Bulls as Riley Price controlled the boards and had 7 points in the period.

The defensive pressure continued into the second period as Bulldog point guard Reggi Price had numerous steals leading to 7 points and a 28-11 first half lead for the Dawgs.

Bulldog offensive and defensive stalwarts Riley Price and Anna Tausinga were pulled late in the period with three falls each.
The Dawgs dominated the whole half as the Bulls had trouble getting off a decent shot.

The third period was sloppy from start to finish as numerous unforced errors were committed. The Dawgs managed to increase their lead to 38-18 after three periods. Little freshman guard Natalie Isidro had two steals which led to easy baskets.

The fourth period featured both Riley Price and Tausinga fouling out early. The Dawgs managed 10 points for the period while holding the Bulls to 8 points making the final score 48-26 for the Dawgs.
Leading the way for the Dawgs were Reggi Price and Brooke Montoya with 12 and 11 points respectively.
The win gives the Dawgs a 4-0 league record and 7-3 overall.

The Bulldogs travel to Pahrump Valley on Tuesday this week for their next home game before hosting Sky Pointe on Friday, January 14.
