It was a busy time for high school wrestling last week for both the Bulldogs and the Pirates. Both teams competed in multiple tournaments on the first week back after the Winter Break.

With COVID-19 quarantines on the rise again and health restrictions in place, there were a lot of open spots in many of the weight classes. Of course, this affected the outcomes on team results in the meets.

The week began with a four-team contest hosted by Moapa Valley High School on Tuesday, Jan. 4. It included Virgin Valley High School, Pahranagatt Valley High School in Alamo, and Lincoln County High School from Panaca.
In the rivalry matchup pitting the Bulldogs against the Pirates.

In the 126 lb. class Gavin Baird won for the Bulldogs beating Chasen Smith by fall.
Bulldog Sam Woods beat William Anderson by fall in the 132 lb class.
Ruben Silveygra put up another win by fall for the Bulldogs against Ty Jensen in the 138 lb class.
At 145, Tafoya beat DeSantiago by fall; and at 152 Matheson beat Anderson by fall for two Pirate wins.
At 160, Bulldog Martin Jordan beat Jared Evans by fall.
At 182, Pirate Gavyn Frederick pinned Jacob Dominguez for the win.
Pirate Clay Whipple beat Dominic Piazza by decision in the 195 weight class.
And at 285, Jarett Jackman pinned Jacob Noel for a Pirate win.

The Bulldog team competed at another meet held on Wednesday, Jan. 5 at Valley High School in Las Vegas. The meet brought the Bulldogs together against teams from Sunrise Mountain, Pahrump Valley and Valley High Schools.

The Bulldog team dominated Sunrise Mountain with a sweeping 66-0 score. They also decisively beat Valley High School 48-21. But the VVHS team ran up against a tough opponent in Pahrump and ended up losing the match 63-18.

Over the weekend, both the Bulldogs and the Pirates attended the Centennial Grappler tournament in Las Vegas.
The Pirates placed three wrestlers on the winners platform of their classes.
Freshman Gavyn Frederick took second place in the 182 lb class.

Grant Henrie, a junior wrestling at 220, went up against some tough competitions and fought his way through the consolation round to win third place in his class.
Braden Leavitt took 4th place for the Pirates in the 113 lb weight class.

The Bulldog team saw three second place finishers in the tournament. Martin Jordan took second in the 160 lb class. Cutler Crandall took second at 170. And Dominic Piazza ended in 2nd place in the 195 lb. class.

Coming in fourth place for the Bulldogs were Gavin Baird in the 126 lb class and Ruben Silveyra at 138.
The Bulldog team ended the tournament in 4th place with a total of 111 team points.
