The Progress
The Moapa Valley High School Girls Basketball team traveled to Boulder City on Tuesday, Jan. 11 where they beat the Eagles 46-17.
As the score indicates, the Lady Pirates dominated the game… well at least the second half.
The Pirates struggled again a bit with sinking their shots but their defense kept them in the game holding the Eagles to single digit points in each quarter.
Moapa Valley held a slim 8-6 lead after the first quarter. They lead by seven at half time with a score of 18-11.
But in the second half Sydney Reese began to dominate the paint as she rebounded and found the basket, leading the Pirates to their big lead. Reese finished with 17 points going 8-10 from the floor and led the team with 5 steals.
No other Pirates scored in double figures. The Pirates were 19-52 from the field and 0-13 from 3-points land.
But the Moapa Valley defense held the Eagles to 2-points in the third quarter and 4-points in the fourth.
“We had a bit of an energy hangover from our Pahrump win,” said Moapa Valley Head coach Brandon Jones. “We started sluggish, but we’re really happy with our defensive performance.”
At the end of non-league play the Lady Pirates are now 14-2.
Jones said that, with the five day CCSD pause, the team is using the time as a mental and physical refresh.
“We have league games the rest of the way and we are excited to battle our league opponents for the league title,” Jones said.
The Pirates will host Coral Academy on Thursday night.Game time is at 6:30 pm.
