Parks and Rec basketball league has record turnout

The local Clark County Parks and Recreation Youth Basketball league had its opening day last week. The popular Parks and Rec season continues through the second week in February.

Record numbers enrolled in the program this season, according to local Parks and Rec staff. No less than 260 kids signed up to participate and the league boasts a total of 28 teams. Each team is coached by generous parent volunteers. Some of those volunteers are coaching multiple teams.

The program includes boys and girls from PreK through 5th grade.

Parks and Rec Coordinator Lauralyn Robison said that the young participants are all looking forward to a great learning experience.

Robison raved about the group of volunteer coaches. “We could not provide youth sports for this many kids without parents willing to coach and support,” Robison said. “We are super excited to offer programs for the kids. It’s important that they stay engaged and active.”

With schools buildings being closing all over Clark County School District for a “5-day pause,” some game locations had to be shuffled around from Moapa Valley High School gym to the Fine Arts Building at the Fairgrounds.

But none of that deterred the kids’ excitement to play. The goal of the program is to have fun. And the room was filled with supportive family members and eager participants to see that happened.

Clark County Parks and Rec offer several activities throughout the year. Upcoming is boys volleyball for grades 4-5. There will also be boys volleyball at the middle school level, “which helps feed into the high school’s new program,” Robison said. Registration for this program begins January 21, 2022.
