The Progress
The Mesquite Senior Games (MSG) Cornhole Tournament took place in the gym at the Mesquite Recreation Center on Friday morning, April 1.
As usual the MSG began the event with the National Anthem being played and a Salute to the Flag. However, on this April Fool’s Day morning the Bluetooth for the phone with the music, played a joke, and would not cooperate. After a long stand, with hat in hand, the pledge of Allegiance was said instead making this an atypical start to the games.
Even so, once play started the participants seemed to be having a very normal good-time experience in the tournament.
Director of Cornhole event, Shaun Edwards said, “We have changed the number of games played instead of playing 15 games we are playing 12, We then have a nice lunch.”
Edwards went on to say that the event had a lot of first-time cornhole players participating this year.
“We have a place here in Mesquite and we come often from Honeyville, Utah,” said Gary Baker, one of the first time players. “We like cornhole! This is so fun.”
Edwards expressed appreciation to the City staff and other volunteers who supported the event. “The Mesquite Recreation Center staff, and all our Mesquite Senior Games volunteers made this event a success, I want to thank you all!” he said.
The Gold medal for the tournament went to the team Confusion Episode. The Elks I team won the Silver medal. And the Bronze went to the Sandbaggers team.
There were four 4-baggers this tournament with Dennis Buszynski accomplishing it three times. Brad Walker bagged them twice and Chuck Werner and Randy Miller each achieved a four-bagger.
MSG Cornhole games are played according to the ACA rules and regulations with modification.
