MVHS Baseball Takes 3 More Games

The Moapa Valley High School Baseball team played three games last week and came away with three wins. A couple of them were one-run games.

The week started at Clark High School in Las Vegas on Monday, Mar. 28. It was an extra inning classic that didn’t end until in the top of the ninth. The game was tied at 6-6 when Logan Scchouten singled for the Pirates on a 1-2 pitch, scoring Rylan Evans. Evans had doubled to start the inning with a fly ball to right field. Landon Wrzensinski had been successful on a sacrifice bunt sending Evans to third. That is when Schouten hit a ground ball to right, scoring Evans.

Moapa Valley needed a comeback as they had allowed four Chargers runs in the first inning. Leading 4-0 in the bottom of the second Clark scored two more runs for a 6-0 lead.

The Pirates earned their first run in the top of the third with a ground ball to Clark”s third baseman who committed an error allowing Johnson to reach first base.

Chandler Evans then hit a double to left advancing Johnson to third. A walk to Gunner Redd loaded the bases for the Pirates. Tyson Staheli grounded to second base, starting a double play. Johnson scored, giving the Pirates their first run.
The top of the fourth saw the Pirates score five runs and tying the game.

Wrzensinski singled to start the inning. Schouten followed with a single followed by Austin Heiselbetz singling to right and advanced on the throw by the right fielder as Wrzesinski scored.

Pettingill then doubled to right, scoring both Schouten and Heiselbetz. Matheson hit a ground ball and reached base on an error by the first baseman. Pettingill was thrown out at the plate on the play.

Redd walked then Staheli singled, scoring Matheson as Redd advanced to third. Rylan Evans singled in Redd ending the inning at 6-6.

Rylan Evans finished with three hits and an RBI. Clark’s Petty hit a homerun in the first to score three runs. Petty drove in all six of Clarks runs for the game.

On Wednesday, the Pirates hosted SLAM and came away with an 11-8 win. SLAM held a 4-0 lead scoring a run in the first and three more in the top of the third.

The bottom of the third watched the Pirates score six runs taking the lead. Moapa Valley started the bottom of the third with two singles followed by a hit batter loading the bases. That’s when Staheli doubled, scoring both Totten and Matheson. Evans hit a sacrifice fly to left scoring Redd. Pettingill singled to right, scoring Wrzesinski on a throw by the right fielder. Pettingill scored on Heiselbetz single to center for the Pirates’ sixth run.

The Pirates would score three in the fourth and a single run in both the fifth and sixth. SLAM scored two runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
Staheli ended up with two hits, three RBI and he scored twice.

The MVHS team ended the week on Friday with a 19-0 route of Cheyenne played on the Pirate field.
The Pirates scored twelve runs in the bottom of the first. They added seven more in the second, ending the game after three innings on a mercy rule.

Pitching in the game for the Pirates were Schouten and Wrzesinski who held the Desert Storm hitless.
