Virgin Valley’s Riley Price was dominant against rival Moapa Valley in a 4-0 victory for the Bulldogs on Thursday, Mar. 31 at the Lady Pirates field in Overton.
The junior righthander pitched her second no-hitter of the season as Virgin Valley extended its winning streak to 18 games while improving to 20-1 overall.
Besides not allowing a hit, Price did not walk a batter and struck out 15 of the 22 batters she faced. Price struck out everyone in the Moapa Valley lineup at least once while throwing 94 pitches.
The only Lady Pirates player to reach base was Delany Graham, who reached on an error in the bottom of the first inning.
Virgin Valley scored a run in the top of the first when Reggi Frei opened the game with a double and advanced to third base on a single by Brooklin Montoya. Frei later scored on a wild pitch.
The Lady Bulldogs added two more runs in third to go up 3-0.
Alex Coverubious, who was 3-for-3 at the plate on the day, singled. Natalie Plancarte and Price followed by drawing walks to load the bases. Then Ana Tausinga ripped a double down the left-field line scoring two runs.
Virgin Valley closed out the scoring in the sixth on consecutive doubles by Marli Wakefield and Coverubious.
Andie Wood pitched well for Moapa Valley. The righthander surrendered eight hits, walked two and struck out seven batters.
“We knew it would be a tough game,” said VVHS Head Coach Travis Griffiths after the game. “It was great to get a win against a really good Moapa Valley Team. I am extremely proud of each of our young ladies for their hard work and accomplishments this year!”
Earlier in the week, the Pirates travelled to Sunrise Mountain and thrashed the Miners 20-6.
With the Pirates trailing 3-4 at the end of the second inning, the Pirates seized the momentum with six runs in the third inning. They never looked back scoring another run in the 4th inning, two runs in the fifth and eight runs in the 7th.
The Moapa team got 20 hits in the game with four Pirate athletes tallying three hits each including Andie Wood, Delaney Graham, Kyndall Longman and Terra Evans. Longman batted in four runners in the game.
Graham pitched the win for the Pirates striking out 10 and allowing 7 hits in the game.
The Pirates played Clark on Monday. So now, with the Clark County Fair this week and Spring Break next week, the Pirates won’t play again until April 20 when they travel to Canyon Springs in Las Vegas.
Then they will take to the road again on April 22 for a rivalry rematch against the Bulldogs in Mesquite. Game time is at 3:30 pm.
Virgin Valley will travel to Las Vegas on Friday, Apr. 8 to face Clark High School at 3:30 p.m.
