Spring Sports Roundup (April 27, 2022)

VVHS Track

The Virgin Valley High School Track teams competed in a weekday meet at Valley High School in Las Vegas on Wednesday, April 20. The meet brought together teams from Pahrump, Somerset Losee, Sunrise Mountain. Several individual Bulldog athletes ended up in the top 3 of many of the events.
On the boys team, Jimmy Kelly took 3rd in the 100 meter dash at 11:34. Kelly won the High Jump event at 5-10.0; and the Long Jump at 20.04.
Ashton Roman took 2nd in the Long Jump at 19-08. Roman also won the triple jump at 43-01. Kelly took 2nd in the event at 42-08.

The Bulldog boys fared well in the distance events. Ruben Silveyra took 3rd in the 800 meter run at 2:30.40. Owen Rappleye took 2nd place in the 1600 meter at 5:09.20. Rappleye also took 2nd in the 3200 meters at 11:36.5.
Riley Averett took 2nd in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 19.94.
Averett also won the Pole Vault event with a vault of 10-06. Dylan Vellinga took 2nd and Connor Averett took third.
Cole Wilson took 2nd in the Discus at 105-09.

The Bulldogs also swept the top three spots in Shot Put. Kade Wilson won the vent with a throw of 38-03. Jeremy Gossett took 2nd and Cole Wilson took 3rd.
On the girls’ side, Kelly Denninghoff won the 100 meter dash at 12.34.

Denninghoff also won the 800 meter run at 2:30.5. Jenna Walters took 2nd place and Emma Hughes won 3rd in the event.
Walters won the 1600 meter at 5:42.5.
Jasmine Aguyilar took 3rd in the 400 meter dash at 1:07.54.
Laila Ponce won the 100 meter hurdles event at 18.14.
Calla Haviland won the Long Jump at 15-03. She also took 3rd in the High Jump event at 5-01.
Audrey Fiso won in the Shot Put with a throw of 33-11.

MVHS Baseball

The Moapa Valley High School Baseball team hosted Eldorado High School on Tuesday, April 19 and beat the Sun Devils 14-4.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the 4th inning when the Sun Devils scored two runs for a 2-0 lead. Pelayo singled to score Delgado who was a pinch runner for Estrada who started the inning with a double. Sanchez scored the second run on a ground out for the 2-0 lead.

Moapa Valley Gunner Redd scored the Pirates’ first run in the bottom half of the 4th when Rylan Evans’ fly ball to center was misplayed. Evans was eventually thrown out at home.
Eldorado scored their final runs after a double by Paule then a two run homer by Hernandez for a 4-1 lead.

But Moapa Valley stormed back with five runs in the bottom of the fifth. A Tyson Pettingill homer opened the inning. Tyson Staheli doubled to score Chandler Evans. Rylan Evans was intentionally walked to load the bases. And two hit batters scored a couple more runs giving the Pirates a 6-4 lead by the end of the inning.

The Pirates scored 8 runs in the bottom of the sixth to end the game. Redd, Pettingill and Austin Heiselbetz each had 2 runs batted in during the game.
Hadley pitched the whole game for the win. He allowed 5 hits while striking out three and walking two. He allowed three earned runs.

On Friday the Pirates traveled to Western beating the Warriors 11-1. It was a game that saw 12 errors by the Warriors. The Pirates had just four hits in the game.
Moapa Valley ended the game with an 8-run 5th inning.
Pettingill had 2 RBI’s in the game.

The Pirates will host Sunrise Mountain on Wednesday at 3:30 pm. They then will travel to Western on Friday afternoon.
