Pirates beat Eldorado in Regional tournament opener

Moapa Valley Pirate pitcher, Aiden Johnson pitched a complete shut out game against the Eldorado Sun Devils Monday in the first of their playoff games. Johnson allowed 2 hits, walke 2 and struck out three. His pitching drew a host of ground balls which made for some great plays in the field by a solid defense that was there to back him up.

Freshman, Garrett Hadley stepped in for usual starting third baseman, Landon Wresinski who was out with a knee injury. He didn’t miss a beat, with 3 great plays at third base. Short stop, Rylan Evans followed up an error that allowed a runner on first with a 6-3 play to his brother, Chandler, which doubled off that runner and one advancing to first. Tyson Staheli, R. Evans and C. Evans also recorded another double play in the game. Tyson Pettingill had 4 put outs from behind the plate, while Austin Heizelbetz had another from centerfield.

Offensively, Moapa Valley started off with a with a double by Rylan Evans in the first inning that was unable to score. The boys first run came in the bottom of the second when Chandler Evans reached on an error that scored Logan Schouten who had walked. Despite a single in the third for R. Evans, no more runs came in until the bottom of the fifth when Tyson Staheli started the Pirates out with a single, followed up by a double by R. Evans that scored Staheli. R. Evans then went on to score on a sacrifice bunt laid down by Austin Heizelbetz. Next, in the same inning, was a walk by A. Johnson whose courtesy runner, Jaden Martinsen scored the last run of the game, on a triple by Schouten.

Up next, the Pirates will take on the Bald Eagles in Boulder City, on Tuesday, May 10 at 4:00 pm.
