The Virgin Valley High School Softball team opened up defense of its regional title by dismantling visiting Sunrise Mountain of Las Vegas, 19-4, on Monday afternoon, May 9 in a first-round game of the 3A South Regional softball tournament at Bulldog Diamond.
The Lady Bulldogs collected 11 base hits including four doubles and a home run in the win over the Lady Miners. The game was called after three innings of play because of the NIAA mercy rule.
Riley Price went 3-for-3 with two doubles, and drove in three runs. Evia Toone belted a three-run homer and had four RBI. Reggi Frei had two hits and three stolen bases – VVHS had seven steals on the day – while Alex Covarrubias added a two-run single. Ana Tausinga and Marli Wakefield each doubled and scored three runs.
Frei went the distance inside the circle giving up two hits, walking five and striking out seven batters.
After scoring eight runs in the bottom of the first inning, Virgin Valley blew the game open by erupting for 11 runs in the second. The Lady Bulldogs also took advantage of seven Sunrise Mountain errors.
