MVHS Teams Win Small Schools Track Meet

Members of the MVHS Girls Track and Field team celebrate after winning 1st place team title in the Boulder City Small School Invitational held last week.

Track and Field teams from both Moapa and Virgin Valleys travelled to Boulder City for the Boulder City Small School Invitational meet on Friday, May 6. The meet brought together 23 smaller schools from across the state of Nevada.

Moapa Valley had a dominating team performance at the meet with both the girls and boys coming away with team titles.
The Pirate girls team won the meet with 179 points. Virgin Valley took third in the meet at 102.

Meanwhile the Moapa Boys team won with 166.33 points. Virgin Valley took second with 93.83 points.
Two Virgin Valley runners won Most Valuable Athlete awards at the meet for both male and female divisions. Kelly Denninghoff, on the girls team, and Jimmy Kelly for the boys, each received this distinction by scoring the most individual points in the competition.

The Virgin Valley girls watched Logan Crude place fifth in the 100 meters with a time of 13.72.
Denninghoff won the 200 meters with a time of 26.73. Natali Isidro placed fifth.
Denninghoff also took first in the 400 meter. MVHS athlete Linn Engelgren came in third running it in 1:08.58.

In the 800 meter, the Pirates dominated as they swept the top four in the run. Talli Fairchild won the event with a run of 2:32.6. Emma Humes placed second, Paige Fairchild placed third while Engelgren finished fourth.

In the 1600 meters Bulldog runner Jenna Walters took first place at 5:32.87. Brooke Sherwood placed second for the Pirates with a time of 6:17.58. MVHS runner Miriam Werner finished sixth.

Walters also won the 3200 meters with a time of 12:42.13. Sasha Barnes placed third for the Pirates at 14:26.70.

Allison Mills won the 100 meter hurdle with her time of 17.93. Virgin Valley’s Laila Ponce placed 6th.
Talley Blackwell placed sixth in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 54.77.
The Lady Bulldog 4×100 relay team won their event with a time of 52.53.
The Moapa 4×200 relay team took second place at 1:53.44.

Virgin Valley won the 4×400 relay at 4:18.93. Moapa Valley took second in the event at 4:26.07.
The Pirate girls won the 4X800 relay event with a time of 10:53.46.

Pirate athlete Sydney Reese won the high jump with a leap of 5-4. Calla Haviland from VVHS placed second with a 4-08 jump. Talley Blackwell placed fifth in the event for the Pirates.
Haviland took 4th place in the Long Jump making a jump of 15-01.25
Reese placed second in the Triple jump at 31-4. Shanlin Totten placed third for the Pirates.

The Moapa girls team placed three in the top four of the pole vault. Paige Bodily won the event vaulting 8-6. Hannah Wasland placed second at 7-06. VVHS athlete Hailey Vellinga took 3rd with a vault of 7-00. And Aubrey Wolfley placed fourth for the Pirates.

Leyah Carvajal placed second for Moapa in the discus with a personal best throw of 99-5. Claire Cox placed fourth for the Pirates and teammate Neena Tromblom fifth.

Bulldog athlete Audrey Fiso won the Shot Put event with a throw of 35-01.75. Shanlin Totten placed third for the Pirates at 34-8.5. Haylie Western placed fourth and Carvajal sixth for the Pirates.

The Pirates boys team saw Degan Jones place fifth in the 100 meters with a time of 12.09.
Ethan Witter won the 400 meters for the Pirates with a time of 52.47.

MVHS athlete Marcus Shambaugh won the 800 meters with a time of 2:09.42. Teammate Trevor Witter placed second at 2:10.22 and Mordechai Yadegar placed fifth.
Cyrus Katich won the 1600 meters with a time of 4:41.84. Yadegar placed sixth.

Kayden Dixon won the 3200 meters for the Pirates with his time of 11:06.59. Virgin Valley athlete Owen Rappleye took second at 11:21.69. Joseph Boss placed fourth.
CJ Anderson won the 110 hurdles for the Pirates with a time of 16.82. Teammate Jonathan Monk placed third at 18:38. Virgin Valley’s Riley Averett took fourth at 18.75.
Anderson placed second in the 300 meter hurdles.

The Moapa 4×100 relay team placed third at 46.10. The Pirate 4×200 relay team placed second at 1:37.29.
The Pirates won both the 4×400 (3:37.28) and the 4×800 (8:51.50) events.

VVHS athlete Jimmy Kelly placed 1st in the High Jump event at 5-08. Teammate Ashten Roman placed 3rd. Moapa Valley’s Degan Jones jumped took fourth while teammate Peyton Neilson placed fifth.
Kelly also won the Long Jump event with a leap of 21-03.75. Roman took 2nd for the Bulldogs at 21-03.75.

Kelly continued by winning the Triple Jump event at 42-08.5. Roman took second.
Jackson Burt finished second for the Pirates in the pole vault with a vault of 9-0. Virgin Valley’s Riley Averett took third.

Eli Cox won the discus for the Pirates with a throw of 123-1. Teammate Logan Stewart placed third in the event.

Stewart also placed fourth in the shot put with a throw of 39-11.25. Virgin Valley’s Jeremy Gossett placed 4th at 38-03.5. Cox placed sixth for the Pirates and Kade Wilson took 7th for the Bulldogs.

Both schools will be in Moapa Valley this Friday and Saturday for the Regional Finals meet and a chance to qualify for the state final the following week at Reed High School in Sparks.
