Bulldog catcher Mason Montoya had a big day on Wednesday afternoon, May 11, in the Dawg Pound. He put a huge home run over the left field fence and got four RBI’s to lead the Virgin Valley Baseball team to a 10-2 win over arch-rival Moapa Valley.

The win moves the Dawgs into the championship matchup on Friday at 4pm in Mesquite.

Senior Kyler Sudweeks battled the high wind and the Pirate hitters on the way to a 7-inning complete-game win.

The Bulldogs scored first in the bottom of the first inning on one hit and three walks. Walks were the downfall for the Pirates most of the day as the wind seemed to bother Pirate freshman pitcher Garret Hadley.

The Pirates tied the game in the top of the second on an error and double off the bat of Chandler Evans.

The Bulldogs jumped on the Pirates in the third inning for three runs with Montoya’s big blow to take a 4-1 lead. The Dawgs added two runs in the fifth inning on a two-run single by Aidan Litzenberger.

The Pirates scored in the top of the sixth on a pass ball by Sudweeks. Rylan Evans singled for the Pirates and worked his way around the diamond to score the Pirates second run.

The Bulldogs scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Pirate relief pitchers Logan Schouten and Landon Wrzesinski walked five Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs Curt Felix had the only hit in the inning making the score 10-2 for the Dawgs.

The loss by the Pirates sends their next game to Moapa Valley Thursday at 4pm. The Pirates will face the winner of the Boulder City and Pahrump Valley game which will be played at 1pm also at Moapa Valley.

The winner will move on to face Virgin Valley on Friday at 4pm in Mesquite for the Southern Nevada Division Championship.

Both teams will move on to the Nevada State Championship at Fernley High School on May 19-21.
