The Progress
The Hughes Middle School Boys’ and Girls’ Soccer teams competed in the final championship play-offs on May 12-14. The tournament was held at the Betty Wilson Complex in Las Vegas.
The Boy’s Team won first place competing against the top two teams from the other four divisions of Clark County School District. It was the very first year that Hughes Middle School has fielded a soccer team for the tournament. During the regular season of play the boys won all their games except one.
The team traveled to Las Vegas three days in a row winning their game each day and advancing to the next round. On the final day they won the championship game.
The team is made up of 6th, 7th and 8th graders. The athletes scoring the most goals were 8th graders Gasiel Sosa, A.J. Duran, and Gavin Oster. Gasiel both played offense and defense in the games. Goal keepers for the team were Karson Garret and Brandon Delgado.
The Hughes girls team also did well. They won the tournament game on the first day. Then they went on to lose in the second in the semi-final round.
The girls team won all their games in regular season except for two that were tied. They played about 14 games during regular season, playing each team in their division twice, once in Mesquite and the other in Las Vegas.
Three standout players on the team were Denise Silveyra and Lineta Kioa. The goal keeper was Lupeta Silvyra.
Coaches for the teams included Scott Trimming and Kai and Amy Davis.
