The Mesquite Amateur Golf Tournament came to town on June 1-3 for a five-day, 54-hole, net-stroke tournament. It all led to an exciting last minute play-off between Thomas Rehorst and Andrew Thompson. The two had to battle heavy winds to the finish.

The winner on the second-round play-off was Thomas Rehorst, and Thompson took second.
“I will celebrate my win with my family in Colorado Springs, soon as we get there,” Rehorst said. “I want to tell them in person. I am taking lots of wine.”

Rehorst spoke into the media camera and said he will definiitly be back next year. When asked about his favorite moment of the tournament he said, “There were a whole slew of tremendous moments. The whole Mesquite Amateur was great, the volunteers were incredible. The golf courses were fantastic. This whole thing is just plain fun.”

Buck Bayly, from Hawaii, won the low-gross trophy. He was quite excited as this was his first time to play in the Mesquite Amateur. He said that his buddies got him to sign-up to participate. But he had no expectation to win anything.

“I have had a great time, the players are so nice,” he said. “One hundred percent I will be back next year.”

A big highlight of the tournament was when participant Carrie Evans made a Hole-in-One on the sixth hole at the Coral Canyon Course.

Gary and Mary Rogers came from New Mexicoto play in the tournament. Gary made it into the finals and took third place in the Super Senior division winning $425.
“We love coming to Mesquite and to this tournament!” Gary said. “Such nice people and it is run well. We will be back again next year.”

This year’s field featured the largest number of entrants yet. The tournament had five divisions with participants competing against players with similar handicaps. Handicaps were calculated using their 12-month low Handicap Index.

Finalist rankings were determined by comparing the three-day cumulative score. The top four participants from each flight competed in the 18-hole championship round at the Casablanca Golf Club on the final day.

Mesquite Gaming Events Marketing Director Christian Adderson reported that 660 participants, from 41 different states, came out for the 19th Annual Mesquite Amateur Tournament. The tournament also had a waiting list.

“This was a great week!” Adderson said. “We had good weather and great contenders. We try to give a first-class experience for the tournament and I think we achieved that this year.”
Adderson thanked all the sponsors and volunteers.

“Next year will be our big 20th year anniversary celebration,” Adderson said. “Everyone will want to be here for that.”
