With just six players turning out to practice last week, the Virgin Valley High School Girls Golf team is looking forward to the upcoming season.
While six is the number needed to field a full team, VVHS head coach Chimane Creer is hoping to pick up a couple of more players before the season tees off.
“We could get some girls out once school starts,” Creer said. “It would be great to get a few more to come play.”
VVHS had eight girls competing on last year’s team. Creer was hoping to have a similar number this season.
“It’s kind of nice to have a couple more players to help the kids to focus more and to get better,” Creer said. “If you know someone is pushing you for a spot, it’s going to make you want to play better.”
During a league match, six girls will be allowed to play the course with the top four scores counting toward the team total.
Senior Brooklin Montoya and sophomore Abi Llewellyn will lead the group of six players for VVHS this fall.
“I expect them to be our best two players,” Creer said. “Brooklin has totally improved and Abi is playing well. I’m hoping the other four will continue to improve.”
The other four players are senior Jaelin Worthen, sophomores Jiselle Lara and Cambria Olsen, and freshman Davey Jo Slack.
“I think we could be pretty good,” Creer said. “The girls played a lot of junior golf during the summer.”
Creer pointed out that with golf, it’s ultimately up to the individual player as to how successful they will be.
“The players have control,” Creer said. “It’s up to them how much time they want to put in. We’ll see what happens.”
Virgin Valley will open the season on August 25 with a match at the Casablanca Golf Course in Mesquite. They will travel to Pahrump on August 29 to play at Mountain Falls Golf Course. Then they will play at Legacy Golf Course in Las Vegas on September 1.
