The Moapa Valley High School Boys Soccer team returned to the practice field last week with a new team and a new coach.
After last season former head coach Randy Tobler stepped down after several years of coaching. Taking his place is new coach Jeff Ward. Ward is seconded by Assistant Coach Aaron Walker.
Last year the Pirate squad qualified for their first ever playoff game in the history of the program. Ward considers the team’s 3-5 league record from a year ago as a base foundation for the current program to build upon.
“Last season, the Varsity boys made it into the Southern Region Playoffs,” Ward said. “We hope to springboard off of that momentum.”
The Pirate team has three returning starters this year. These include Trent Nelson, Miguel Rios and Jimmy Ward.
“We have also added seven more players including three foreign exchange students,” Ward said. “We have a lot of young talent that we are developing. We will call upon that to help the team go forward.”
Ward said that he is pleased to be starting the season with this team. “I am excited to watch our team develop and compete,” he said. “We have a high ceiling!”
The Pirate season will start this week on Thursday, August 18 at the Nelson Memorial tournament in in Ely, Nevada.
The first home game for the boys’ team is on Monday, Aug. 29 against Pahrump.
The Pirates will face off against Virgin Valley for the first time this season on Sept. 12 in Mesquite. They host the Bulldogs later on Oct. 17.
