Pirates, Bulldogs Compete In Larry Burgess Invite

Moapa Valley High School senior Marcus Shambaugh placed 2nd for the small school boys varsity division race at the Larry Burgess-Las Vegas Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 10 at Veterans Memorial Park in Boulder City.

Morning rain started to roll in causing some interesting racing conditions.

Shambaugh was cruising for the small schools placing 2nd with a time of 16:59, only 12 seconds behind Hurricane’s Seth Armstrong.

Owen Rappleye was the first to cross the line for the Bulldog team. He finished 7th with a time of 18:18. The rest of the top 5 for VVHS were, Isaac Craig (18:35), Gavin Hughes (20:05), Drew Maxfield (20:50), and Destry Tobler (21:03).

Other MVHS runners placing in the top 21 of the race included Isaac Thompson (18:32), Joseph Barnes (19:21), William Anderson (19:30), and Hal Thompson (19:55).

On the girls side finishing first for the Pirates was Sasha Barnes in 8th place at 24:09. Following Sasha was Beverly Potts (26:55), Jorja Freeman (31:22), and Kenzie Hughes (32:09).

The first to cross the line for the girls Bulldog team was Camryn Lee at 25:01. Following were her teammates, Ketely Hanson (29:20), and Lilli Boone (37:11).

The Pirate boys took 2nd place in the meet behind Hurricane while the Bulldog team placed 4th behind Somerset Academy Sky Pointe.

For the Frosh/Soph race the first to cross the line for the Pirates was Gavin Hendricks. He placed 30th with a time of 20:49. Following him were his teammates, Christopher Houston (23:24), Dustin Jones (23:59), and Jenson Blake 24:53.

The Bulldogs had 3 frosh/soph runners finish in the top 75 including Krae Griffiths (21:58), Kalen Jenson (22:07), and Kye Griffiths (23:03).

Jessa Freeman was the only girl to run for the Pirates in the frosh/soph race. She placed 61st at 34:18.

Both cross country programs will compete at the Moapa Valley Pirate Invitational at the Clark County Fairgrounds on Saturday September 17.
