The Lady Pirates faced two worthy opponents last week. On Tuesday, Sept. 13, they travelled to Las Vegas where they lost a match against SLAM, 6-2. Then on Thursday, the Pirates hosted a match against Pahrump Valley which ended in a tied 0-0 score.

The Pirates struggled in the game against SLAM. “They are a pretty good team, but we really didn’t put our best foot forward there,” said MVHS Head Coach Lisa Cornwall. “It was just a rougher game for us all together.”

Scoring the only goals in the game for the Pirates were Hannah Fullmer and Brooke Sherwood.
But the tie against Pahrump Valley was almost as good as a victory for the Pirates, according to Cornwall.

The strong Trojan program has soundly beat the Pirates over the past several season, usually by a wide margins. A MVHS team hasn’t even scored against Pahrump since 2018.

“Pahrump never lets up,” Cornwall said. “So it was a full 80 minutes of being engaged and staying on our game. That doesn’t always happen. But the girls were determined and they stuck together as a team. We had a game plan and they stuck with it.”

The Pirates faced Virgin Valley in Mesquite on Monday. They will then host Chaparral on Wednesday, Sept. 21 beginning at 6 pm.

The Lady Pirates had a full week playing in no less than seven matches in the span of six days.
The Pirates began on the road against Boulder City on Monday, Sept. 12 where they lost the match 3-0. The Eagles pounded the Pirates with set scores of 25-15; 25-17 and 25-17.

On Wednesday, the Moapa team hosted Pahrump Valley. The Pirates made quick work of the Trojans winning the match in three sets: 25-14; 25-19 and 25-10.
Over the weekend, the Lady Pirates traveled to Las Vegas where they played in the Durango Fall Classic.

It was a tournament which brought in some of the best teams from around the nation from New York to Hawaii. A total of 64 teams attended the tournament.

“We had the opportunity to take on nationally ranked teams including the #4 team in the nation based on Maxpreps.com rankings,” said MVHS head coach Mandie Matheson. “We were the only small public school that attended and we relished the opportunity to learn and grow.”

“We grew in so many ways and felt honored to be able to attend,” Matheson added. “We won a match Saturday against La Salle from California. We look forward to implementing the things we learned to push us in practice to continue to improve.” said Matheson.

The Pirates results were as follows:

Friday
Coronado 25-14, 25-12
Campolindo (CA) 25-9, 25-18
Fayetteville (AR) 25-9, 25-13

Saturday
