The Virgin Valley High School Football team faced a big and tough Rancho team on Friday night, Sept. 30, in Las Vegas and came away with a hard fought 21-0 victory.
The outcome of the game was not really determined until the fourth quarter as neither team scored in the first period.
The Bulldogs managed to put together a drive in the second period which resulted in a 7 yard touchdown pass from Gunner Cortez to Cutler Crandall giving the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead after Kurt Felix’s extra point try split the upright.
The third period was a stalemate as neither team could reach pay dirt.
The Bulldog offense jelled in the fourth period sustaining drives for two touchdowns. Cortez scored on a keeper and fullback Hunter Otteson went in from 10 yards out making the final score, 21-0.
Cortez led the stats total going 10-20 for 119 yards. Nine Bulldogs shared in the 10 completions with Martin Jordan getting two completions.
Penalties hurt the Dawgs passing game due to the lack of a back judge for the entire game.
Isaiah Frieling led the rushing attack with 64 yards on 10 carries.
The Bulldogs defense once again limited the offensive output of their competitors. Martin Jordan led the Dawgs with 12 tackles intimidating the Rancho runners. The Bulldogs had 5 sacks during the game, stopping any Ram passing attack.
Curt Felix was perfect 3-3 on his extra-point kicks.
“Rancho was physical up front,” said VVHS head coach Matt Woods. “We still need work on our offense and limit our penalties and mistakes. Our upfront guys are all sophomores and need time to jell.”
The Bulldogs host Valley H.S. on Friday October 7 in a homecoming week game. The Vikings are 1-5 for the season and were shut out last week, 51-0, by Moapa Valley.
