Runners Compete In X-Country Meets

By MORDECHAI YADEGAR II

The Progress

The Moapa Valley High School took on a heavy race schedule last week. On Thursday, October 6 the underclassmen team members competed at the Bud O’Dea Frosh/Soph Championships. The Virgin Valley High School Cross Country team also competed in this race. Then on Saturday, October 8, the Pirate team ran in the Lake Mead Invitational.

Freshmen on both teams took on the 2.5 mile course first at the Bud O’Dea meet on Thursday.
For the Pirate boys, Hal Thompson came across the line first for the freshman division with a time 16:23 and placing top 15 earning a medal and shirt. Following him were Dustin Jones (18:21), Mitchell Stoker (20:00), and Jenson Blake (21:04).

Next up was the Sophomore Championship race. Mordechai Yadegar II had a strong race placing third with a time of 14:27 earning a medal and shirt. Yadegar also broke MVHS alumnus Preston Humes’ course record by 9.9 seconds and now has the fastest sophomore 2.5 mile time in MVHS school history.
Following Yadegar II was Gavin Hendricks (16:14), Christopher Houston (18:10).

Sash Barnes and Jessa Freeman competed in the girls sophomore championship race. Barnes crossed the line with a time of 19:49. Freeman crossed with a 30:38.

For the Bulldog freshman girls Camryn Lee crossed the line in 20:20, and Yamila Vega Archuleta finished in 21:35.

Coming across the line first in the sophomore race for the Bulldogs was Isaac Geig with 14:56. Following Greig was Destry Tobler (16:59), Krae Griffiths (17:22), Trae Hughes (17:40), Kalen Jenson (18:14).
Saturday was the Lake Mead Invitational and a total of 40 schools traveled to Veterans Memorial Park in Boulder City to compete. All runners for the Pirate boys were registered for the 5000 meter Varsity small schools race.

At exactly 8:00 am the horn went off and the race was on the way. With the amount of runners in the race it started to become aggressive. Right before Marcus Shambaugh was about to start his second lap of the course, while in position to win the race, he was tripped up by a competitor. In the end, Shambaugh still finished the race placing second with a time of 17:10.

Following Shambaugh was Yadegar II (17:27), Isaac Thompson (18:27), Gavin Hendricks (19:06), and Joseph Barnes (19:46).

Both cross country programs will travel to the Clark County Fairgrounds on Tuesday, October 11 to compete in the Moapa Valley Weekday meet. The MVHS team will also travel to Canyon Springs High School on Saturday, October 15 to compete in the Coaches Association Invitational.
