The Virgin Valley High School Boys’ Soccer team travelled to to rivalry territory to play against the Pirates of Moapa Valley on Monday, Oct. 17. The intense game ended in a 5-2 victory for the Bulldogs with VVHS star strikers Zach Timming and Alex Rivera scoring two goals in two minutes.

The game started off lucky for the Bulldogs. Rivera put the first goal on the board at just 3 minutes into the game.

Trimming had a close chance of getting another goal with a free kick, but it went high above the net. Five minutes later he got another shot at it and struck his first one of the night from a rebound in the box.
Things began to intensify between the two rivals as the game went on. With two goals eight minutes into the game, the Pirates did not get discouraged and played strong to defend their turf.

Lucas Sandberg made a solid kick into the goalie’s box from a throw-in that unfortunately missed. The team continued to play well with close saves from their goalie, Lane Briggs, maintaining the score 2-0 at halftime with the Bulldogs in the lead.

The Pirates entered the second half with new found energy. They nearly scored two goals back to back but just couldn’t get it past VVHS keeper Danny Isidro.

The Pirates finally made it onto the scoreboard 52 mins into the game with Sandberg finding an opening. From center field, Sandberg got the ball past VVHS defenses to the goalie’s box. Isidro stepped out of the net and missed saving the goal.
Sandberg took another shot a bit later but missed.

Ten minutes later, Trimming once again kicked the ball into the net with an assist from freshman Andrae Duran making the score 3-1 for Virgin Valley.

Two minutes later Duran again managed an assist, this time to Rivera for another goal, making it a 4-1 lead for Virgin Valley.

With a few minutes left in the game, the pressure was put on Moapa to get another goal. They did just that thanks to Juanes Bracamontes who made the score 4-2 with 20 minutes left on the clock.
Finishing the match, 5-2, Trimming stole the ball and scored his third goal making it a hat trick (3 goals) in minute 76.

The Bulldogs were recognized for their win by receiving the Rivals Cup Trophy after two years of it being in Moapa’s possesion. Senior Zach Trimming won the cup his freshman year and is ending his senior year bringing the trophy back,

“It’s good to leave knowing [the rivalry cup] is left in good hands,” Trimming said. “We got the job done, but I still think we have a long way to go before we get to where we need to be.”

The team’s hard work was celebrated with music and cheers from family and friends.
