The Progress
The Moapa Valley High School Girls Soccer team mopped up the pitch with a visiting Cheyenne team on Wednesday, Oct. 26 in Moapa Valley. The Pirates took the offensive from the very beginning and kept up the pressure through to the end, shutting out the Desert Shields with a final score of 8-0.
At about five minutes into the game, MVHS senior Lexy Fullman punched the ball through Cheyenne defenses from mid-field with a long pass to teammate Brooke Sherwood. Sherwood had no one stopping her but the Cheyenne keeper all the way to the goal. She had no trouble getting past the goalie and putting the first point on the board.
From there it became almost a score-at-will situation for the Pirates. Before the evening was up, Sherwood had scored three more goals, leading the Pirate team with four points on the board. Hanna Fullmer added two more to the scoreboard. Talli Fairchild and Abbie Hammons both took a turn visiting the net with one goal apiece.
The victory puts the Lady Pirates in good position for the 3A Southern Region playoffs going on this week. The team has a league record of 9-1 with their only league loss going to Virgin Valley on Oct. 12. That puts the Pirates at #2 seed in the Desert South.
The Pirates faced SLAM on Monday evening for the first round, which took place just after The Progress went to press. SLAM was 4-2-4 and seeded #5 in the Southern Mountain league.
